Got to go for a beautiful outdoor run in the south's 60 degree winter weather. Now that's more like it!!
Short sleeves, knee length bottoms, and Wyatt was sporting her cowboy hat for protection from the sun (or so she says...I think she wears it because it is totally cool looking).
We walked a couple miles at the end- so that made our average pace rather slow...didn't even bother to check it. I'm pretty sure we stayed under 10mm, so I'm a happy camper. |
|
| | Tried the p90x stretching dvd today. It was good to stretch, but that guy is a little obnoxious, don't you think? |
| |
Ah, the call of the early morning alarm clock. Too bad Christmas break had to end.
It was dark outside this morning. No clouds, no moon. Just that bright plant shining on me..I'm guessing it's Venus, but my astrological chart went missing & I'm not sure.
Did my PT first to warm up, then went out and ran in our balmy 34* weather. I think there was a glitch in the matrix, because one of the loops I run on had a rabbit run across the road right in front of me two different times in the exact same place. Guess he already knew how deep the rabbit hole was.
Had a very small progressive, but progressive run. The last mile felt the best- bringing it home strong with the Pet Shop Boys. I enjoy quiet runs sometimes, but most of the time, I love my tunes.
Knee didn't hurt at all, but after the run I could feel that it felt different. Not in pain, and not really even sore...just different.
On a "glad I didn't run there" note, there was a dead body found on the trail I love to run on. I haven't been on the trail in a while- guess I'll stay off of it until they figure out what happened to that poor guy. |
| |
| |
It was cold, so I did the Jillian Shred level 1 for my warm up, then did 2 miles of speedwork. .5 regular, .5 fast, repeat.
Probably should have done more, but I don't want to over-do it with my knee. A fine line between being too cautious and not being cautious enough.
9:40, 7:48, 9:06, 7:32 |
| |
| |
wonderful run. It was really dark out, and for some reason it seems like people aren't as nice to give me road room when it's cold outside.
I ususally get 80-90% of the cars to pull over the yellow line & give me some space when I'm running in the morning dark. But today I only had 10% of the cars pull over & give me room. Most of them acted like they were ready to run me over.
The run felt amazingly good, but knee twinges after. I iced & stretched. Re-evaluating plans for Feb.
|
|
| | decided to go easy & not push my knee into an injury trying to train for a mid-Feb marathon. Kind of a let down, but I really don't want to hurt my knee again & it was sore a bit yesterday. So today I slept in & did Jillian's shred 1 and my physical therapy. Not quite as fulfilling as a run, but my knee felt better by the end of the day. | |
| |
Did my PT before my run for a warm up.
My first mile I felt like I was running a good strong pace. I couldn't believe it was a 10:25 pace...I thought for sure it was more like 9:40. Funny how things seem different some days.
I eventually progressed and increased my speed so I was actually running a 9:40, but it took a couple of miles. I'm trying not to over-do it or push too much so the knee can strengthen & heal without being abused. The run felt good, and I feel great. No knee problems today.
Update on the man shot on the running trail. The trail was actually closed to runners/walkers/bikers (there were signs posted) for hunting that day. A couple of hunters had just "jumped" a deer and it was running out of it's hiding spot when they shot at it. Except one of the guys didn't shoot the deer, he shot the runner. They called 911, but the guy died. I guess it's his fault for being on the trail when it was closed. |

run with Wyatt. It was windy & cold, but I needed a therapy run like nobody's business. Just what I needed, no one had to walk the plank today. Thank goodness for Wyatt! |

3 Words: Krispy Kreme Challenge
It's featured in the back of the newest Runner's World magazine. And just so you know, I've already been registered for weeks. It is ON this year!!!
I even had a dream about the race last night. I was with RAD and Allie & we ran to the donut stop point, and they sat and watched in horror & amazement while I managed to eat all 12 donuts. Then we all headed back, only I couldn't keep up with them, and I got seriously nauseated and lost my way back..... I was trying to run around the city looking for the finish line.
It was still a good dream, because it's the only time I've eaten donuts and not felt guilty about it. The ones in my dream were good too....chocolate iced donuts & glazed ones....mmmmm....nom, nom, nom, nom.
It would fun if RAD & Allie could come out for the race, but when Allie said she wanted to do more "out of state" races, I don't think this is what she had in mind.
| |
School cancelled, so I slept in. woke up to snow everywhere. Big beautiful flakes. Doesn't happen much down here & it looks beautiful.
I did 45 min on elliptical, then tried the p90x plyometrics. It was my first time & wasn't sure what to expect. It kicked my trash. wow, what a workout.
I decided to go for a walk around the hood in the snow. we had almost 4 inches at the time. It was a beautiful walk. I decided to run a little, and went slow because of the snow. after a mile, I just went back to walking. It was easier to enjoy the beauty of the falling snow when I was walking. |
| |
| |
cut my ankle on the ice walking out to the chicken coop today. there's 4 inches of snow with 1/2 inch of ice on top of it. Sharp stuff, evidently. So that put a stop to my idea of running in the snow today.
45 min elliptical - then I baked pumpkin biscuits, pumpkin bread & sweet potato muffins -
then, I got super brave and tried the Shred #2. It was good to feel like I was getting a workout.
went to Wyatt's in the afternoon to do laundry (washer's broken) and make carmel corn!!
did physical therapy while our family "The Office" marathon continues. What else do you do on your 2nd snow day in a row?
Looking for a good way to spend day #3 tomorrow. I believe I will be trying another p90x. why not?
| |
physical therapy for warm up, then ran 7 miles. ap 9:20. Just a little ice on the roads in the shady spots. The trees looked like they were glistening with diamonds because the ice all over the branches was starting to melt in the sunlight. It was really pretty.
Later, I did Kenpo (I loved it). My kids knocked on the door & asked me if I was okay because my Kenpo shouts sounded more like "injured/constipated mom" shouts. I told them it was just Kenpo, and "there's more where that came from."
Went shopping and bought the Wii Just Dance 2. It is so much fun!!! I don't do well, but I get a giggle out of trying.
After dinner I did my mat pilates. Get to back to school tomorrow!!! |
| |
| |
Shred level 2 for my warm up (it actually kicks my heiney), then I had time for a quick run, so I tried 2 miles fast. little warm up/cool down before & after. 1st mile: 8:23, 2nd mile 8:03.
My legs can feel the burn from all the extra cross training stuff I've been doing, but I feel strong. It's a nice kind of sore feeling.
I had to throw in one quick iko iko dance before getting ready for work. it's my favoite one on the Wii just dance game.
Now off to the magical land of work! |
| |
| | did some quick PT and then went for a 4 mile progressive run. 9:50, 9:14, 8:52, 8:30. |
| |
| |
P-town 9 mile loop. The sun was out, but it was windy. Usually the wind is in my face the whole 2nd half, all the way home. Today I was lucky and went out into the wind.
Avg pace 9:11.
I had to rearrange the furniture so it's not in the way when I do the Wii dances. My children say the new arrangement is "unacceptable." I told them to walk the plank. It's good to be the Pirate Queen!! |
| |
| | 1.2 mile walk around the hood at sunset. I needed something beautiful today, and that was my ticket. |
| |
up till 3 am worried about teenagers and their dumb ideas. Made me wonder how my parents ever got any sleep at all.
So sleeping in till 9 wasn't really sleeping in, but it was nice to have the day off so I could sleep till 9 instead of 5.
Did my Wii dances for a great pre-run warm up, then Wyatt came over and we did the p-town loop with the blackbridge rd extension to make it 10 miles even. A handsome looking fella pulled up in a truck while we were running and offered to tinker with our heaters.
Came home and did 40 more minutes of the Wii dance before showering & doing errands. My claim to fame for the day is a 9330 on the Charleston and a new high score on Rasputin. Now if I could only get the Rasputin song out of my head!!! |
| |
| |
Plyometrics in the morning (with a few cool-down dances).
Then I spent wwaaaaayyyyy too much time dancing after dinner, but found it keeps my mind off my worries, so it's like a drug for me.
Then I got the dumb idea to try the ab ripper x. I tried. I really tried, but it was impossible for me to do all those exercises the way/speed they were doing them. I'm sure that won't stop me from being sore in the morning. Hooray! |
| |
PT warm ups then a nice jog in the rain. Love my day-glow yellow rain jacket!!
|
| |
| |
Shred level II with Jillian, then a speed workout. 8:31, then 7:58.
pm- dance, dance, dance.... I may need an intervention |
| |
| |
Up too late watching TV. Finally got my office fix!!
So I only managed 3 before I had to get ready this morning. If I'm good, I'll do something more after work. But my pirate-like tendencies may keep me from doing anything good. Probably just stir up some trouble somewhere instead.
(pm update) just when I thought both kids would be gone for the night, someone hijacks my evening of splendor and decided to stay home!! I would have started a mutiny, but I decided to make him do all his chores instead. That way, I won't have to nag him all week-end to do it! Take that, Blackbeard!
I tried the p90x core synergenistics workout. meh- not my favorite. RAD can have it. I'd rather do kenpo or plyometrics.....or dance. |
| |
| |
late afternoon run with Wyatt. Chilly out today!
My back muscles are sore from the core synergestics last night. Nothing is hurt, they're just sore from the new kind of workout.
Did a little dancing & made some ricotta blueberry pancakes with a homemade honey syrup. Nom, nom, nom, nom...... |
| |
| |
6 miles 9:13 avg pace.
Loving the moon..still bright in the morning sky :-)
pm- kenpo & dance magic |
| |
| |
stayed in bed & spent the morning with the Wookie
danced in the afternoon
Great Day! | |
| |
6 miles in a light rain. avg pace 9:11
Ab ripper after- this is harder to do after a run than when I do it in the evening when I'm not tired. |
| |
| |
shred level 2, then a 4 mile run
recovery run speed. What am I recovering from, you may ask? All the cake I've eaten this week I guess. |
| |
| | Elliptical and ab ripper. Kept my feet up for ALL the mason twists today. That crazy video may actually be working!! | |
| |
1 hour warm up on the dance floor. MR kicked my trash..again. But I'm still claiming that I'd win if he were actually moving his feet and dancing, not just doing the arm movements!!
Then we headed off for the P-town loop. Wyatt is entertaining her parents today, so we went without her. After about 5 miles, we did some walk/run/walk/run stuff. It was beautiful out today- 50's & sunny. I didn't mind the extra time out in the sun enjoying the world. Just chores and errands to do at home, so I was enjoying the journey. |
| |
| |
2 mile walk- it was beautiful! almost 70 degrees :-)
dancing & then some Pilates
| |
PT for warm-ups and then an early run. avg pace 9:08.
Little buckaneer got up early and went out for a quick run this morning. I'm not sure what motivated him to do it, but I'm glad he's interested in doing something.
wore the big knee brace & my knee feels fine today. The run/walk on Saturday really seemed to irritate it.
The cafeteria brought in some fresh baked cookies & asked us to help them "take care of them." How can I say no to that? They were still warm :-) |
| |
| |
Tempo run- 8:54 avg pace. Dark..no moon. No tunes..just quiet time to reflect on what an honor it is for me to be voted the most horrible mother in the world award this week.
Finished with 20 minutes on the elliptical to round out an hour of sweating.
Boss man brought in Bojangles bacon, egg, & cheese biscuits this morning. Bless that man!! |
| |
| |
Restless night - heard the rain all night and started resenting it instead of loving it like I usually do. So when it was time to get out & run, I didn't want to go out in the rain. I stayed in & did plyometrics. Probably a better workout than if I'd run anyway.
It's 70 degrees here today..but overcast & rainy. I'm hoping to get a run in after work...even if it is raining.
| |
| |
Another dark morning. A little chilly, but as I went out, I was grateful that the wind had died down from yesterday. I didn't realize it was at my back...because when I turned around- BAM! there it was at my face the whole way home.
I had a treasure hunt on my run today..made it fun & interesting. Good think I have big pockets in my running jacket!! I ended up gaining 4 pounds in treasures this morning :-)
Treasure hunting made my pace slower, but I was okay with that. Felt so icky yesterday that I was just happy to be feeling well enough to run. Forecast for Fri & Sat are rain & icy rain. That's going to make the Krispy Kreme run a little soggy, but what a story we'll have to tell!!
|
| |
| |
Rainy dark run. Really just perfectly wonderful. I wore my old shoes so my new ones will be dry for the race tomorrow.

Krispy Kreme Challenge (4.7 Miles) 00:51:31, Place in age division: 54
This was one for a feather in my pirate hat. Ick.
It was rainy and cold (by NC standards) with temps around 35 and it had been raining since Thursday night...so everything was wet. We woke up at 4 to drive to Raleigh. Got there in good time and found a super close parking spot. No lines when we went to pick up our bibs & tshirts. The motto on the tshirt this year read ->tighten laces, <- loosen belts. 4 miles, 2400 calories, 12 donuts (150 fat grams too). I feel sick just remembering it.
There were lots of great costumes, and a few folks who seemed to have forgotten to finish dressing (no shirts, string bikinis, tiger print negligee with a pink cowboy hat on a man, a hot dog costume, a gorilla costume, Elvis costume, Masked men wearing "legal superhero" capes, and on & on). It took place on NC State campus, so lots of red & white along the way too.
My shoes ended up walking me into a deep water puddle on the way to the race start, so I was sloshing around to being with. There were 7500 runners.. we all had to run 4.3 miles to the Krispy Kreme store where boxes of cold donuts waited. Once at the store, we had to eat all 12 donuts, show them our empty boxes to continue as an official challenger (the lesser runners could take their donuts with them and finish, but wouldn't be considered as Krispy Kreme Challenge runners). It was downhill 90% of the way to the store. The crowds were really bad, so running around people was the hardest part. Once at the store, we grabbed a box and started in. I felt icky after my first donut. By the time I was in the middle of donut #2, MR had finished 3 and started #4. I was going downhill fast in the competition of donut eating. They were cold and the thick glaze was crusty. No water could be found (saw people with water, but couldn't find where they got it). I tried...I really, really, really tried. When I was on #8, MR had finished his 12. He was itching to go, and felt bad for me, so he helped me eat 2 donuts so we could head back & beat the 60 minute time limit. Every bite I took was scary, because I wasn't sure if it was going to result in me vomiting all over the place. I felt sooooo sick!!! As we showed off our empty boxes & bib #'s, I still had half of an unfinished donut in my mouth. After we got the "all good" to run back, I went 1/2 a block and spit the last donut out. I never want another glazed donut in my life!!
We passed piles of donut vomit, and one very squished all over the road dead opossum, which was actually nastier looking than donut vomit!
Since the way out was 90% downhill, the way back was 90% uphill... and it wasn't easy with a sludge of donut sugar goo in my gut. We slowed down toward the end, but still finished in plenty of time. Couldn't get to the port a potty fast enough after crossing the finish line :-)
Haven't really felt like eating much at all the rest of the day. Wondering what tomorrow will bring... hate to even consider it.
Paces were:
1st mile: 8:24 (really crowded)
2nd mile: 7:57 (better)
next .25: 2:001
next .10: 12:00 (waiting in line to get a box of donuts and eating them all...or having someone who loves you enough to help you eat them all)
3rd mile: 8:33 (going back up hill)
4th mile: 9:05 (still going up hill and starting to feel it)
last .36: 9:26 (still going up hill & the donut slude is winning)
I'm NOT interested in doing this again, but I am so glad I did it once. I'll be happy to drive anyone who wants to try it next year. I'll even run- but I'm not eating any donuts!!
Then, super duper news, my favorite Mizunos are now back in a narrow toe box, so I've got a shiny new pair of shoes!!! |
| |
| | 2 mile walk around the hood, some dancing, and too much super bowl junk food |
| |
So happy to back in the Mizunos. Love those shoes!
Progressive run today. Avg total was 8:59. I'm trying to not watch my splits as I run, and just let the way I feel determine my speed. Seems to be going okay overall.
Foggy run. New batteries in head lamp & all the mist made it hard to see, so I stayed in the hood & played it safe. We've got too many stray cats around here....they're just popping up all over the place lately. At least they don't chase & bite me! Their glowing eyes just creep me out!
Ab ripper X to follow. Aaahhhhh.... my favorite....NOT. |

Wanted to run, wanted to sleep. Want to be strong, want to be easy on the knee.
Chose elliptical today for 45 min on a tough course. Not the same as running, but it felt good.
| | Dark chilly run this morning. Found one more treasure I must have missed last week. Avg pace 8:56. |
New Minuno Pink Miles: 8.00 |

Recovery run. left the garmin on the charger & just went out to enjoy my SNOWGLOBE RUN! Yeah!!! We had a 3 hour delay, and there wasn't even enough snow on the ground to know that it was snowing. So I got to sleep in 2 hours and run in the daylight, with the snow. It was fabulous :-)
MR went out with me. Found out yesterday he has bone spurs on his heel. :-(
He's going to get an orthotic insert/cushion for his shoes, but didn't have it yet. Made it a tough run for him. He started running in the VFFs 3 months ago and he's wondering if they're the cause of the bone spurs. I hope not, because he really likes the shoes.
We went treasure hunting too, and found 5 more treasures and...(drumroll please)...as we were running, a shotgun shell casing rolled out from under the tire of a truck that drove by and landed right in front of me! So a bonus treasure to boot! What a great morning for a run!!! |
| |
| |
am: rest- ball crunches
pm: 4 mile easy effort run |
| |

sunny but windy afternoon run with Wyatt. The gentlemen stayed back and discussed important things like firearms and barns.
We had so much to talk about, the run was over before I knew it. Looking forward to longer runs as the spring warms us up a little more. Some crocus buds are already up & ready to open very soon. Yippie!!
Took the littlest buccaneer and went out to dinner with Wyatt & co. Laughed so much we cried. What a great day! |

2 mile walk around the hood to enjoy the sunshine & warm air
Realized I need to start eating better..maybe tomorrow. |
| |
Got to run in the dark with MR this morning. His heel is really bothering him & I feel bad. The cushion they gave him to wear just makes the pain worse, so he's not wearing it. Seems like he needs something else, but I'm not an expert.
6 miles, no treasures to pick up, but the day dawn breaking through the dark of night and pouring a rainbow of color into the sky was treasure enough.
Lots of sugar cookies with icing and chocolate covered fruit so far. I'm thinking the eating better goal will start tomorrow.... |
New Minuno Pink Miles: 6.00 |

p90x plyo in the morning with MR. He said he didn't do it full effort, so he called it his p45x workout
bleachers after work- I loved being outside getting some sunlight while I was exercising!!
Post note: calves sore from the plyo, quads & glutes sore from the bleachers. but it feels so GOOD!! |
|
| | Did a speed workout, but took a while to warm up because I was cold..it was below 30 this morning & I was thinking it was more around 40.Â
Paces were: 9:11, 7:55, 6:46 (last .2)
still sore from plyo & bleachers. Going to take it easy the rest of the week for Saturday's run. |
| |
| | 45 min on elliptical. Still more sore from the bleachers than I'd like to be. | |

p90x stretch video
wanted to be stretched out & ready for race Saturday morning |
| Race: |
Myrtle Beach Marathon (26.2 Miles) 06:00:11
Beautiful day for a run in Myrtle Beach. The full moon was up and waiting for us at the starting line. I hadn't trained for the full because I didn't want to push my knee recovering, but I'd signed up for it last March along with some friends (who also hadn't trained for it).
So we had a plan- we'd run the 1/2, then walk/run the rest. The course had an 8 hour time limit, and we felt like we could manage to finish and earn our medals this year. Last year, when we'd all trained and were ready to run the full, the race was cancelled due to snow.
MR had signed up for the 1/2 and although he wasn't ready for it, he decided to run it anyway. There's a difference in being able to pull a 1/2 out of your pocket and a full. I am certain there are more long term physical consequences to running a 1/2 when you shouldn't and running a full when you shouldn't. Or at least that's what I keep telling myself.
We ran together until the 1/2 split off after mile 11 to go to their finish line, and the full kept going forward. I tried pacing easy for the first few miles because I thought I would be running/walking the second half. If I would have known I was going to be walking the entire second half, I would have increased my speed at the beginning.
I also failed to start my garmin when we crossed the start line. I pushed a button and it beeped at me, but I guess it wasn't the start button, because when we were approaching mile 1, I went to look at my garmin and it was all 00:00, 0.0s. oops. When we ran past the mile 1 flag, I pushed the real start button, so everything was off by a mile. MR had his watch on & he had us at 10:20 for mile one, so I'm just going with that.
Our splits for the half were: 10:20, 9:53, 9:43, 9:32, 9:36, 9:30, 9:17, 9:07, 9:09, 8:48, 9:08, 8:53, 8:36, (and an 8:02 pace for the last .17 to the 13.1 split).
After I got my 1/2 split time, I walked back a quater mile to my hotel, used the bathroom, took off my jacket, put on my big knee brace, and waited for my friends who were going to finish the 1/2 with me. They said they were going to be running a slower pace, so I figured they weren't far behind. At this point, I was feeling really good. I know I had another 6 good miles left in me, and wondered if I could have finished if I'd really tried. But I thought long & hard about what the consequences would be of pushing myself and my dear little knee too much. I didn't want to have to wait 2-3 weeks for recovery or re-injure my knee and wait even longer. So I decided it was in my best interest to just wait for my friends and run/walk the rest with them and have a great time in the beautiful sunny weather. I'm certain I made the right decision now, but oh, how I wanted to run & run & run.
I ended up waiting 29 minutes for my friends. This .51 miles was a whopping 57:44 pace :-) because I walked to the hotel, stood around & walked back to the 1/2 point. One of my friends wasn't doing great and needed to walk, so we started walking. Lucky for us, her husband had peanut m&m's. That is super fuel, by the way!
We had a wonderful time walking & talking and enjoying the day. My friend's hips didn't allow her to run at all, so we just walked (except for a couple of times when there was a photographer taking photos & we acted like we were running). We got passed by all kinds of people, all ages, shapes, and disabilities. Our pride was gone, we were only there to enjoy the journey. More than once we were grateful that we'd left the cash & credit cards in the car because we were walking by deli's & restaurants that smelled delicious from the road.
MR had a nap & a couple of beers & met us around mile 25. He said he'd run in with me, so I started running to the finish line with him. The he left me because he had to run to the nearest port-a-potty, and I decided to keep on running. I managed to pass the dear sweet grandmother wearing a mechanical knee brace that had passed us a couple miles earlier, and finish in just over 6 hours. It was certainly the most fun I've had being a participant in a marathon. My official time was 6:00:11. It's my new ru-ck PR. I forgot to stop my watch at the finish line, and remembered only after walking & getting my medal, then walking back to the finish line to get pix for my friends.
Splits for the second half were: 15:23, 15:35, 16:06, 15:21, 16:03, 16:02, 15:40, 16:35, 17:46, 18:23, 18:16, 17:30, (started running again) 8:53, (last .15 had a top speed of 6:34 but I think I only ran .07 of it and walked the rest after I finished).
I managed to finish the marathon and have a good time. Those two don't always go together, so I feel like a winner! We spent a long time in the hot tub the rest of the afternoon and ate too many crab legs for dinner. Perfect way to end a great day.
I'm looking forward to planning more races this year. I'd like to do the ultra again in September, but doing it in September cuts out training for anything in October or November since I need a long time to recover from 50+ miles. Choices, choices. I think I might actually get MR to commit to a full sometime too. Lots to look forward to! |

hot tub & 2 mile walk. taking it easy for the day.
knee feels good- quads are sore.
| |
Back to life, back to reality-
p90x stretch and ab ripper in the morning.
feeling great, thinking I'll try and run a little or elliptical tomorrow morning.
| |
Went out to get a couple in with MR in the morning. After .5, he had to quit (his heel is really sore). So we walked the rest of the 2 mile loop for a nice morning run. Saw someone else running in the hood. It took me by surprise, but it was a pleasant surprise.
After we got home, MR jumped on the bike and I managed to get 2 miles in before I ran out of time. Probably a good thing to start back slow & easy anyway.
legs & knees feel great. :-) |
| |

What a slow run. It took me 4 miles to feel warmed up. My legs were tired too.
My paces were all over 10mm. MR rode the bike along side me. Didn't see any other runners out today, but it was back down in the low 30's so maybe they were smart & stayed indoors.
Signed up for a 5k next Saturday. Rumble on the Lumbee...race entry gets you free admission to the chili cookoff afterwards. I'm starting to see a theme here...running & food. 2 of my most favorite hobbies :-)
I think as long as I can get my legs back from being sore from the marathon that I might do well. It's a fine line between recovery and being lazy. |

A little warmer & a little later today so I caught a fabulous sunrise! The trees are getting ready to explode with blossoms & the daffodils are all up with the buds prepped to open. I am so glad spring is coming!
MR went running with me & wore his VFFs. Less heel pain with them than the running shoes. We ran 4 miles. paces were (around) 10, 10, 9, 8:30. The last .09 we raced and I had a 6:43 for my pace. No way I'd be able to run that fast much longer than I did, but it's cool to have a fast pace somewhere on my blog :-)
I noticed when he was racing me, his turnover was at least 2x as fast as mine. He looked like the roadrunner. It made me laugh because it was comical, but it really seemed to work (he beat me) with speed. Something to think about for my speed workouts in the future.
We had a short little dance-off later in the day and I actually won 2 of the songs! I'm not singing the "comeback kid" song yet, but I did feel fantastic when I finally beat him! |

| | Took the day off to get caught up on necessary evils of yardwork. Literally spent 830 am-300 pm doing yard work. MR was out working with me and we never did get everything done. At 330 I got a short run in. My first day running in shorts this year! It is taking me a good 1.5 - 2 miles to get my knee warmed up. Tomorrow I will ride bikes w MR and run on Sunday. Another hour of yard work after the run then we took buccaneer b to see a movie and ate more popcorn than I thought Was humanly possible. Hooray for me! Ab ripper x in the am before lawn duty. |

| | 30 mile bike ride with MR. Beautiful early spring day. |
| |
Afternoon run with Wyatt. Shorts & tshirt weather. Beautiful trees all full with buds ready to explode any day now. Fields full of green winter rye or tiny purple weeds- promise of good things to come!
MR rode along on the bike. The worst part of the run was that it had to end.
We spoke of planning another road-kill run this spring. Hooray!!
Realized I've double booked my Saturday morning this week. I'll either have to skip the pre-paid race or skip a special program my little buckaneer is in. It should be a no-brainer, but I'm having mixed feelings! Bad Mother Pirate of the year ;-) |

| | Lazy bum day. Went shopping all over NC looking for bikes. Found out the ones we wanted were at the first store we'd gone to up the street. Go figure. |
| |
Officially started my Road Kill Run training today. Run is scheduled for April 30th!!
ran a 9:07 average pace. Progressive run all the way except the last .1 which was 5 seconds slower. I'm not even going to count it!
Ab ripper in the am to follow. I can actually tell I'm getting better at some of those exercises!
After work MR and I got to try out our new bikes. How Fabulous they are. They're hybrids, so not as fast as a street bike would be, but compared to the walmart specials we've been riding, they are amazing :-) We were so excited to ride them that we forgot to push start on the garmins when we started. Around mile 3.25 we started them. For the next 5.75 miles, we finished in 25 minutes. I think it was around 16 mph. It doesn't sound fast, but it felt like we were flying.
Then we had a little dance off. I think it was a 2-3 score. I'm the 2 obviously.
Not a bad way to start my "back to work" after a 5 day holiday. |

Someone turned off my alarm. It wasn't me. MR said it wasn't him, although he did admit to touching it yesterday. So it must have been the cat or the chicken.
Either way, I got 1.5 extra hours of sleep. Only had enough time for a 20 min shred video. I thought of Carolyn while I was doing it. It is a good quick indoor workout.
I'll have to do my Road Kill Run training after work. Speed work!! Can't wait.
PM run: 1 mile warm up, 1 mile @ 7:58, .5 cool down, 1 mile at 8:06, .5 cool down, 1 mile at 7:57, 1 mile cool down. avg pace was 8:44. Pretty happy with it. The first speed mile felt tough, but towards the end, I was feeling really great. Could have gone another round or two. |

I wasn't sure how this run was going to go this morning. After the shred yesterday and then running speedwork last night, I thought I was going to be KO'd.
I wriggled on my cheetah pants and did my pt warm ups. MR got up and went out with me. We averaged a 9:44. It was 1 min slower avg pace than yesterday, but the effort felt faster than it was. Tired legs I think. The cheetah pants are awesome- I can feel the support while I am running. Legs felt better after a few miles (as usual). |
| |
| |
pilates and core (slash) ab ripper X
then stretching. lots of stretching.
| |
Wriggled into the cheetah pants early this morning to get my miles in early. Lots of things to do before lunch time today.
Started off slow, just wanted to get the miles in. Felt good and just plugged away. MR rode his new bike along side of me to keep me company.
ran into knee troubles. had to walk & stretch quads a couple of times. disappointing, yes. Glad I was able to finish. I thought the cheetah pants & small knee band would be sufficient, but it looks like I might still need the big brace for longer runs.
I'll be working on leg strength more this week too. Don't want any more knee troubles. Ever. |

Rainstorms this morning. We went out for a walk this afternoon when the rain had stopped & the sun was out.
I had on a sundress and my suede sandals. 1/2 way around the loop, the rain came back. Torrential downpour with rivers running down the streets. What could we do but laugh & finish walking home? We were drenched from head to toe, but what better excuse do you need for some hot cocoa in front of the fireplace?
| |
Did my strength work first. p90x legs & back. I don't have any upper body strength, so instead of hanging from a bar & swinging like a mad woman, I use my weights & try to do other arm/back stuff. I'm sure it's not the best, but my legs got a good workout.
Then I did my 3 mile run. That's what the training plan said, so I just did 3. Which was good because I was out of time. It was later in the morning, and I enjoyed the sky lighting ceremony in the east. Always a good day when I'm greeted with a rainbow of light. |
| |
| |
My plan to do elliptical and p90x was hampered by the warmth and comfort of my bad this morning.
So I worked the core synergestics and brought it on in the living room for an hour. I feel ridiculous doing it & I'm glad no one is watching. Luckily, when the kids left for seminary I was doing lunges and not rolling around like a fish out of water trying to flop a superman/banana on the floor.
Followed up with physical therapy exercises. Not as easy to do after working out and it is before.
I want to run, but I'm really trying to put my faith in the "low miles" training plan. Lots of cross training & making the miles I do run count.
| |
speed/tempo today. Wasn't sure I could pull it off, but ended up exceeding my expectations...so I'm the winner.
Training plan said 6 miles warm up, 4 @ 9:09 pace & cool down). My first mile was around a 9:30, and all my miles after that were under 9. Avg overall pace was an 8:45. I didn't even need the last mile to cool down; I actually ran it faster than all the other miles. Felt good all day.
Wore the bigger knee brace & didn't have any troubles, so I'm happy for now :0) |
New Minuno Pink Miles: 6.00 |

| |
up late at night & rain in the morning. I only had 3 miles on the training plan & it didn't seem worth it to get wet for only 3miles. So I did p90x kenpo instead.
I'll run later today when it's (hopefully) not raining.
After-noon, after-dinner run. not a good idea. hamburger helper burper upper. slow run, but glad I got it done. MR ran with me in his VFFs- I think it looks silly when he runs & I have to try not to laugh. A big grown man tip toeing along the road. |
New Minuno Pink Miles: 3.20 |
| |
| | Another plan B day. Wanted to do elliptical & then a shred. I had to set up the elliptical because it'd been folded up when MR cleaned the garage a couple weeks ago. I don't know what he did to it, but it's not working. So I did p90x plyo instead. I kept wondering if it was a good idea or not, because I don't want my legs too sore for my long run tomorrow. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. | |
| |
I woke up with sore calves from the plyo Friday. They were sore, but didn't get in the way of my run. We drove the route first to make sure I had my miles right, but somehow my brain and the car didn't work together the right way and I ended up having a 15 mile route instead of 14. It was fine, and I ended up running a negative split. My last couple miles were pretty fast (for me) so I think that's a good sign that I can do more miles.
I wore the big knee brace, and I'm glad I did. A few times between miles 4-9 I heard my knee grumble at me a little bit, but the brace kept it in check and I only stopped once to stretch my quads (which seems to give my knee a little relief).
I've been on the look out for a treasure box to adorn with my road treasures and to store other treasures I find in. We saw the perfect looking crate in the ditch. MR was on his bike and stopped to check out the crate. When he went to pull it out of the ditch, he found that it was actually holding a dead animal. Half the animal was in the crate and the head was hanging out of the box drown in the water in the ditch. It was NOT good. We named the dead animal "Treasure." Because my treasure box was now "Treasure's" Box. Had to leave Treasure and the box in the ditch. It didn't smell good at all!!
Yes, I have photos, but I don't think they're nice at all. I sent one to RAD and her response was, "now that's just nasty!" It really is. We did however conclude that Treasure looks more like a little dog than a cat based on the teeth that were exposed in it's mouth. Poor Treasure. Who puts a puppy in a wooden crate and throws it in a ditch? Unacceptable.
Good run, overall pace was 9:35. Beautiful day. I'm so happy spring is here!!!!

It is so beautiful outside here! I couldn't stay indoors and miss being out in the wonderful world. We went on a bike ride. Found a new back road route that took us on a 3 county trip.
We rode by and saw "Treasure"....still hanging out in his box. Then around mile 9 we rode by a field where they were flying model planes. It wasn't easy riding in a straight line while my eyes were on the plane flying around. It's nice to see people out enjoying spring.
We ended up going around 24 miles. The ride home was into the wind which wasn't as much fun as riding out, but it was all good. Enjoying the new bikes and lovely rides. We don't really go very fast, our avg pace was 12.9 mph. A guy passed us on his bike at one point...he was really going somewhere. We were enjoying the day.

| |
Oh my. 4:30 am is really tough when my body still thinks it's 3:30 am. So I slept in till 5. We had to compromise.
5 miles. First mile was slow...10:18. Then I had a 9:08 and progressed up to an 8:20.
No time for abs rippers or shredding... I needed a nap after my shower, so maybe I'll get something else done later. Maybe not. We'll have to see what the gods have in store for me today! |

cardio X and ab ripper.
I really wanted to sleep in because I'd been up all night and I don't know why!
But I got up and did the workout & I was glad I did. It's not really a tough workout compared to the plyo or the kenpo, but I was still sweating like a pirate by the end. |
| |
My husband sent me to bed early last night because I was walking around like a glossy eyed zombie who hadn't had enough sleep.
This morning I look like a glossy eyed zombie that has had enough sleep!
It had just finished raining and was humid, but only 55 degrees, so it was perfect weather for a light jacket. My glasses fogged up, and I ran in a couple of puddles, but what the heck, it's all good.
The cow pastures smelled like manure today. Some days I don't smell them at all, but today was a different story. Maybe the rain and the warmer temps. So that was my treasure for the morning :-)
Avg pace 8:56. My legs feel so strange running in the cheetah pants- the compression feels strange. I wonder if it's the extra blood flow that's been giving me headaches... maybe it's not allergies after all.... hhhhmmmmm... |

Went with MR to run laps at the park while the littlest buccaneer went to seminary. We only got .46 in when his heel was hurting too much for him to run. I decided I'd just walk with him and run a little after school while she's in art club. Maybe I'll try the bleachers.
Cooler morning today, but clear skies- the stars were a treat to see. It's easier to enjoy them walking on a paved path than when I'm running on the road and need to keep my eyes on the pavement.
|
| |
| |
Well, I finally got those miles in from yesterday. Had to head out early so I could be ready in time to pick up seminary buccaneer and take her out for breakfast.
I do not recommend arby's breakfast hash browns. Oh Ick! No amount of arby's sauce could kill that mess.
Avg pace was 9:09. I tried to keep my pace between 9:30 & 9:00. Mission accomplished.

Six easy miles. Beautiful last day of winter! Ran with MR, so he set the pace. 9:50-9:00 was our range. I was disapointed that my knee started popping around mile 3.5. It did it a couple of times and I stopped to stretch out my quad and I tightened my knee band. Still popped a could of times more on the way home, but not as bad.
Tired of knee problems. Want to run free.
After a quick break at home and a wardrobe change, we headed out for our 4 county bike ride. I've been wanting to do it for a while now, and today was the perfect day!! Beautiful ride out in the country among the farms and fields. We went from Cumberland, to Robeson, to Hoke, back to Robeson, then through Bladen, Cumberland, Robeson, and finally back to Cumberland County. It was 40 miles in all..just around 3 hours. We weren't breaking any speed records, just enjoying the ride.
My legs were tired and sore though. Felt like mile 20 in the marathon when we still had 5 miles till home. And for some strange reason, we were in some kind of twilight zone vortex where no matter which direction we were riding, the wind was blowing in our faces. It was always blowing head on...and we rode in a circle!!
It was a productive treasure hunt day, however. MR was the treasure hunter extrodinaire. The first find was a broken statue in the field. He was able to rescue the part that had the head with a basket on top of it. Fit in his backpack perfectly. That would have been treasure enough, but fate had more in store for us on this trip.
I was headed up the overpass and really focused on pedaling strong into the wind as I went uphill, so I never heard him yell out, "What the CRAP is that?" I didn't see that he had stopped and turned around to pick up another treasure. All I knew was that when I had finally reached the bottom of the overpass, I turned around to see where he was, and he was just cresting the top of the hill. It made me mad because I had to pull over and stop and wait for him. I was feeling really grouchy about all of it, and was ready to make some comment about "thanks for making me lose my momentum" when he rode up on his bike, and as he passed me, I saw that there were 2 long barbie legs with white stiletto heels poking up out of the back of his bag. It made me laugh and I just couldn't be grouchy looking at those silly long legs poking out the top of his bag. He'd found a Spanish Dancing Barbie..complete with a wire hoop skirt and fan. It was certainly a perfect treasure and I'm glad he got it. He rode the rest of the time with those barbie legs sticking out the top of his bag.
We stopped for a snack at McDonalds at mile 24. Nice break. Want to get attention?? Wear biking shorts to McDonalds. It's like wearing a huge red blinking light that says "Stare at my legs!"
We saw a few other treasures on the way home that wouldn't fit in the backpack. There was a stuffed my little pony, a bratz doll head that you can style the hair on, and 1/2 a lazy-boy recliner. (It is important to note that he wanted to make sure I got the mattress in the background).
My legs were sore the rest of the day, but it was all worth it. I'm not sure I'll be going on rides that long again for a while, but I'm glad I had a chance to do it when it was so beautiful outside. |

| | 1.2 mile walk through the hood. All the pear trees are full of leaves, the dogwoods are sneaking out now, and the wisteria is ready to pop a purple show on us. |

shred level 2 and 45 min on the elliptical
after dinner, went for another walk around the hood with MR. Wisteria is out and smells so beautiful. Love the spring, but there's so much yellow pollen now. The pine trees are showering us with their love. |
| |
Speed/Tempo today. Did my physical therapy exercises again before starting my run. I'm thinking it helps keep my knee in check. It cuts 15 minutes out of my workout time, but it really is working out, isn't it?
the plan was 7 total, 4 at a 9:09 pace. My first mile was 9:48, and every mile after that was under 9:09. The last 1.5 were going to be my cool down, but I felt so good that I just kept running at the faster pace. My last mile was the fastest of all (around 8:10). Avg pace was 8:46.
There is so much pollen in the air right now. My headlamp was lighting up all the particulates in the air, and there was so much pollen that it looked like I was running in a smoky or foggy cloud.
63* outside this morning. Warmest morning we'll have for the next week, but it was delicious! |

| | MR took Wyatt and I on a long run around the airfield on base. He was going to run a while & then ride, but threw in the towel before we left the parking lot and rode the whole way. It must have been a long 3 hours for him, but he was a good water boy & never complained. I've read that it's good to run slow on your long runs because it takes longer and gets your body used to running a longer time. If that's the case, then it was a good long run today. Our pace was pretty darn slow, but the distance didn't seem so bad. We had a lot to talk about & catch up on. What is amazing is we both ended up back in town a couple hours later at the same restaurant. We hadn't even planned or discussed it. We were there texting each other & didn't know we were both there!!! My knee isn't in a lot of pain, and I didn't have pain running today, but it feels sore tonight. Probably just from the distance. Nice run on a beautiful spring day before the rain started. It started raining on the drive home & it's rained all day. Dogwoods are all in bloom and the trees are beautiful with their green leaves. Wisteria are all over the place and the holly tree blossoms smell soooo sweet. |

It was a cold (for me) 37* outside this morning, so I had to drag out all my cold gear that I'd been so happy to put away 2 weeks ago. It looks like we're going to have a week of cold weather, so I'll leave the gloves and fleece out for the week.
Running felt like I was clomping along and looking like an oompa loompa. Just one of those "off" running days. I eventually got my groove, but it wasn't until the last mile or so.
Did my PT for warm up and wore the small knee band. I didn't have any pain, but I can feel some soreness. Aleve to the rescue.
Paces were 10:10, 9:08, 8:53, 8:50, and 8:32 for the last .83 miles. I had a route I wanted to run today rather than an actual distance (I just wanted over 4.5). Avg pace was 9:10. That's faster that I thought it would be. I didn't check my paces as I ran, I just ran how I was feeling. I don't feel like it's a bad run for a clompy/stompy Monday morning run.
Today is supposed to be a teacher work day & the kids are supposed to be home, BUT we are all here at the school making up a snow day. The only consolation is that it's a crummy rainy day outside, so I'm not wishing I was home taking in the beautiful spring sunshine. |
| |
| |
Plyo X. Knee is twanging today. Not pain, but sore, achey & twangy.
Today is MR's birthday so I spent the morning (after plyo) making lasagna. That is a valid excuse for being late to work, isn't it?
| | Speed day and longer run day. I had to get up on time this morning again. 2 days in a row - I feel like a winner in a competition that awards finalists nothing but tiredness. I did my pt warm ups and headed out for my 8. It's been a long time since I've run 8 miles in the mornings. I ran 1.5 warm up, then 1 mile at an 7:58, 1/2 mile easy run, 1 mile at 8:03, 1/2 mile easy, 1 mile at 8:03, 1/2 mile easy, 1 mile at 7:32, 1 mile easy. Avg pace was 8:40 (if I remember correctly). The fast paces were tough & I felt like I was working hard. I'm glad I did it & exceeded my goal paces. Since my knee bothered me so much yesterday, I wore the large knee brace- probably a good idea. I didn't have any pain, but the knee is still sore today. Taking Ibuprofen and trying to ice when I can. My legs (the hamstring areas) are sooo sore today. I guess that p90x plyo put a hurting on me yesterday. There was a light rain this morning on my run, but I had my ball cap on & it didn't get on my glasses. And that my friends, is my treasure for the day. Running in rain covered glasses in the dark stinks! My were dry today :-) |

| | Well, the snooze button won round one today, so I was 10 minutes late getting up & out. I ran almost .5 and stopped to stretch out my quads to loosen up my knee a little. It was really dark outside, and I thought I'd passed mile one and couldn't figure out why my mile chime hadn't gone off. I looked at my watch, and I'm not sure what I was/wasn't looking at, but I realized I hadn't started my watch after stretching, so I pushed the start button & then the lap button- Trouble was, the watch was already on, so I actually turned it off. Didn't realize my mistake until around mile 2 when it didn't go off again. The watch read .96 miles. Oh well. I just ran a little further & waited until the turn around point to re-set the watch and start over. It was foggy outside, so I think my brain got full of the fog too. I wanted it to be a slow/recovery run. I have no idea what my pace was for the first 1/2 of the run. I was over a 10mm at the 1/2 mile mark, so I had a good, slow start. The last 2.66 miles were 9:28, 9:33, and 9:09. Looking forward to sleeping in some day. |

Let myself sleep in today! What a treat :-)
1 hour p90x stretch, and then ab ripper x, because I needed a little adrenaline boost.
I'm like a junkie & need my fix every morning.

Trail run with Wyatt while MR rode his new bike and filled in as water boy. It was a beautiful day to run, got to see the sun come up and there were some beautiful spots of scenery along the path.
We park at the stop in the middle of the trail. Good news: there's a port-a-potty there! We ran 4.5 miles out, turned around & came back to the car for a re-fuel & stretch. Then we ran out 5 miles and back 4. The last mile we walked for a cool down. The last mile is all uphill, so we liked not having to run it at the end :-).
Slow, slow pace, but we did our miles & got our time in. Had a little nap in the afternoon- so nice.
We are considering changing the plan a little, and instead of running 2 20 mile training runs, just running one of them, taking a week to recover, and running the 26 the next week. It's our personal marathon, so we can change it if we want to. I think it may be better to do it this way. Any thoughts? |

| | 1.2 mile walk in the morning (I slept in till 9:50). I LIKE SLEEPING IN!!! |
| |
Good morning, starlight! The big dipper was the first thing I saw when I walked out my front door. Pretty cool.
Out of bed at 4:30, PT warm ups & on the road by 5:10. I wanted to run somewhere between 5 and 6 miles. 5.55 worked out perfectly. I wrote down my paces so I'd be sure to remember them...but I'm not exactly sure. Here's my best from memory: 9:47, 9:12, 8:50, 8:35, 8:16, 7:40 (the last 5.55). My avg pace was an 8:48. That I do remember.
Got to saw the light creeping into the sky this morning...reminded me of the conference talk yesterday. It was beautiful- as always. |

| |
shred level 2, 30 min elliptical, p90x ab ripper.
sweat fest in the house!!
Glad it was a crosstrain day because there was a thunderstom rolling through this morning during my normal run time.
Knee didn't bother me much when I was exercising, but now, 3 hours later it's not happy. I need a knee fairy to fix it.
| |
In order to get 9 miles and my PT warm ups done, I have to get up at 4:00. I snoozed it till 4:10, and drug myself around trying to get ready. It was a little chilly, but felt good.
3 mile warm up, then progressive speedwork. It all ended up being progressive in the end, except my .18 mile cool down at the end. Stopped to stretch after 1.5 miles. Seems to be a good thing for my knee when I do the quad stretches after a little warm up running.
avg pace 8:48. splits were 9:45, 9:20, 9:04, 9:02, 8:57, 8:38, 8:34, 8:11, 7:39, and 9:24 for the cool down. Then I walked .2 miles home & stretched a little more.
I've been feeling good at running at the 9:00-8:30 pace when I'm warmed up. It feels like I'm really "running" at that pace, but I don't feel like I'm dying. I really pushed the last mile, but felt strong at the end.
Just me & the dipper out again. Wondering when the moon will show up again. |

recovery run. wasn't sure my knee was going to let me run at all today. did my PT and started out really, really slow. After half a mile, started feeling warmed up and more comfortable.
avg pace was 9:45. Just perfect. Happy to see the sunlight creeping into the sky in the morings again while I'm up.
I hate waking up early, early, early, but I hate not having enough time to make a good, healthy breakfast either. One that fills me up & doesn't make me hungry again in 2 hours. I may need to just cook oatmeal at night.
knee aches less today than yesterday. happy day. |

knee troubles have got me down. trying to cut out running for a quick recovery.
48.8 miles on the bike with MR. 2 different loops. Had to go home & put on some warmer clothes on. The last time I'd seen the weather, it was supposed to be 80* on Saturday. Something had changed since I'd seen the weather forecast.
Beautiful bike ride. Mr. found a one handled aluminum blue hooker and put it in his bag. It kept banging him on the head the rest of the way home. Which reads better if you replace "It" with "his hooker" !!
Then he found a flag to put in the bag so the hooker became very patriotic looking, and when we were almost home, he found a red flowered lei. Seriously. so of course he lei'd his "you know what."
I'm so glad he's around to amuse me, otherwise life would be dreary & boring.
I guess you could say he's my treasure.
| |
I'm not sure you can even call it 2 miles of running. some running, some walking. Just trying out the knee. Didn't want to hurt it, but kept hoping I could just get it warmed up enough to get comfortable.
before going out, I did my p90x ab ripper and my physical therapy for...my knee, of course.
Found a treasure in the middle of the road today. I don't think he was playing opossum. He just was. |

| | We tried watching the utube video on KT tape for the knee. Then we did our best to tape it up. It's not the same as the way the physical therapist did it, but it seems to be working it's magic. I did the P90X legs & back this morning, as well as doing my physical therapy exercises after. It was tough doing my pt after the video workout. I think that's good for my muscles, though. Which will be good for my knee. Hoping to run tomorrow or Thursday just a little bit. | |
| |
two sessions on the elliptical 45 and 20 min.
p90x ab ripper.
kt tape still holding on for the most part. going to try a little run tomorrow morning. can't wait!
| |
Progressive run. Started easy then just slowly increased. Avg pace was 9:03.
splits were (around) 10mm, 9mm, 8:50, 8:22.
I felt good starting. Had a knee twang just after mile two. Then 2 more during mile 4. Do I just keep running through them, or am I doing more harm than good? It feels great running, except when I get the "twangs."
I wish I had a good, reliable, knowledgeable knee doctor that understands a runner's mindset. I might as well keep wishing on the knee fairy. Yes, I'm mad. I'm going to allow myself to be bitter today about the fact that I can't get the help I need and I have to waste days going to referrals and waiting for appointments. Pirate pity party. Bring your own drinks.
Okay, I decided I'd take some action instead of whining without action. Because we are men of action, and pointless whining does not become us.
First available appointment with ortho is May 2nd. Wow...that's only 2 and 1/2 weeks away. I just want to cry. Now I'm entitles to my pity pirate party because hey, at least I tried.
For all of you who think National Healthcare is the answer to our health care problems, let me enlighten you that it's not the answer to anyone's problems. Unless you like waiting 2 1/2 weeks (or more) for appointments on a regular basis. AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!! |

Stayed up late to watch Will Farrell on the office. Only saw the last few minutes, so I'm looking forward to watching the whole thing later this weekend.
30 on elliptical and then ab-ripper X.
hoping for a good run tomorrow.

Got out early with Wyatt & the water boy. 9 mile p-town loop. I was singing praises at mile 5 when I hadn't had any knee trouble (it was taped & I had the big knee brace on), and then at mile 6, I had a snappy kink. It hurt, but after the initial POW, I ran on it without any pain. Had another kink/snap around mile 6.5, and then nothing else the rest of the run. No knee troubles for the rest of the day.
Helped with Fayetteville Beautiful (City wide clean up) for the morning hours. Then in the afternoon, tornadoes tore through town and everyone's been cleaning up since. At least the side of the road for the 1.5 miles was clean :-(.
Prayers for those who lost their homes/family members. |

No knee problems today. Felt like my running groove was off a little, but I know there are going to be days like this.
We had a 2 hour delay due to tornado damage from Saturday. One high school has 2 million $ damage to athletic fields, and one elementary school is closed for the remainder of the year.
Got to run with MR since we both had delays. Nice to run in the sunlight during the week. Just a taste of what's coming during spring & summer vacation :-) |

30 min elliptical- tough workout
shred level 2- really starting to sweat
ab ripper x- my yoga mat was so wet with sweat it turned into a slip & slide
good times! | |

Nice run..70* outside at 5 am.
Trying to go easy. Not sure if we're going to try the roadkill run this weekend or not, so I'm trying to run/taper at the same time. My training plan turned into a soup sandwich.
Knee was good (taped with brace). AP 9:05
Moon was finally out with me- beautiful sight. Making everything better, just having my morning friend out with me. |

shorts & tee shirts today. Got out late, but it was ok since I was doing a shorter run.
beautiful scene running home. Sky turning pink in the east amid the clouds, fog settled low on the fields, and the mood behind me lighting my way. Left my music at home, got to enjoy the sound of the birds singing their morning salutations. Made me wish I had left more time for running so I could have enjoyed it longer.
p90x ab ripper. I hate it, but I love it. |

Did I mention my inlaws are living in my driveway for the next week?
Shred level 2 and ab ripper x.
Good Fry-Day. |

4 miles, then ab ripper
spent the day at wrightsville beach- perfect weather
buccanner #1 & his friend (I'll call him "Beavis") thought it would be fun to not wear any sunscreen all day. I told them to put it on, i asked them if they put it on (they said yes, because they did...in a small X on their chest), reminded them to put it on again & told them to put on shirts when I saw they were getting red.
They thought they were SOOOOO funny. |
New Minuno Pink Miles: 4.00 |

| | Took the in-laws to the Cape Fear River Trail and we all biked the 8 miles together. Not really a trail, more of a paved path, but beautiful. Some nice hills made it a good workout. |
| |
Finally got to run with Wyatt today. Looking forward to her "Red Neck Olympics" birthday party bash on Saturday.
MR rode the bike. |
New Minuno Pink Miles: 7.00 |

Rain, rain, and more rain. Thunder kept me inside today. In no mood to be swept away by a stray tornado coming through the area.
MR did the Kenpo X with me. We had fun. I love shouting along. Walked the hood in the pm with the MIL.
| |
Wanted to do 9. At mile 7 my knee starting snapping again. The first 3 times, I just kept running and it was okay after the initial shock of the snap. After the 4th time, I had to walk. Achy pain raidated up my quad. That was around mile 8. I walked 1/2 a mile and then ran the rest of the way home. Felt good & thought the snapping was over until .05 miles from my house, and it started again. Glad I've got the ortho appt on Monday.
I threw in the towel & did some upper body strength by raking dead thatch out of my lawn. Got an awesome inner thumb blister!! Not as awesome as my buccanner's 2nd degree burn blisters that opened up into weeping sores on his back from his terrific Monday at the beach.....but still awesome.
Now that the weather is warming up, I'm pleased to announce that there was plenty of fresh road kill to treasure on my run today. Most notably were the tortise and the hare. Neither one of them are finishing that race :-) |
New Minuno Pink Miles: 8.50 |

After my disappointing knee troubles yesterday, I took a break today. It was different having a Saturday not being spent/scheduled around a run.
In Laws have pulled out of the driveway & are off on their way. It was a nice visit, but I got tired of hearing how "horrible, ugly, unhealthy, hurtful," etc, family is. I love my family; every last crazy sob in the bunch. ;-)
Best part of the day: RED NECK OLYMPICS. Wyatt's b-day party supreme. The cake was a single wide trailer with horses in the yard (mini choc chip poops under them), a rooster on the roof, and a toilet in the front yard with fresh roses in it. We played relay games involving opossum tossing (blindfolded), digging up animals from the pet cemetery with plastic spoons, shooting at plastic police men with a bb gun (aka "pop the po-po"), and duck-hunting rubber ducks. I can't wait for next year's games.
I think I did run a little when it way my turn in the relay race, which somehow makes all of this relevant to this blog!

| | 2 mile walk around the hood |
| |
Wanted to try & re-create my knee pops because I had my ortho appt this afternoon. Everytime I've tried running over 6 miles the last few weeks, it always happens. So of course, it didn't happen today.
Got a nice workout in anyway. 8 miles, 8:50 avg pace. Started slow & sped up.
Dr wasn't able to identify what the problem was. Ordered another MRI and told me I could just continue business as usual until then. Sounds good. I also got a spiffy new knee brace. It's not the thick neoprene stuff. A very thin one...nuskin or some name like that. Looking forward to using it Wednesday. |
New Minuno Pink Miles: 8.00 |
|
| | 45 min on elliptical and ab ripper x. |
| |
Tried the new brace today. I can tell there's a brace on, but it is easier to move in than the older one and it doesn't rub the back of my knee raw....so I like it!
No popping again today. I'm guessing that's good. Less worry for me. I tried some interval training. 1.5 warm up then speed for .2, recover for .2 (for 2.5 miles). Then I ran .25 speed off/on for 2.5 miles, and .5 speed with 1 mile recovery.
My ap was 8:50, the same as Monday's progressive run, but I got there an entirely different way, and I felt more exhaused today than yesterday. It really felt like a good workout. |
New Minuno Pink Miles: 8.06 |
| |
| |
easy miles today. Just out enjoying running with my new knee brace. No pops or snaps, just some sore muscles from the sprints yesterday. Good feeling soreness, not bad.
Enjoyed a beautiful sunrise. 9:32 ap. Tried working on form, but I find when I really work on form, I speed up - and I didn't want to do any speed today. Slow form is difficult.
Saw a rabbit running with me on the opposite side of the road. he'd run, then stop, then run, then stop. He was faster than me and grew tired of our game, so he ran off into the bushes.
Took a nap before going to work this morning, and slept so deeply I didn't hear my alarms go off. Good power nap! |
| |
| | did some stretches,a few strengthening exercises, and a very slow and short run. Good easy recovery day for my long run tomorrow.
|
| | Long run with Wyatt and the Water Boy. Weather was nice all day, so we slept in and ran later in the morning. Slow pace, great conversation. No awesome treasures on the road, but the run & company was treasure enough. No knee prolems wearing the new knee brace.
|
New Minuno Pink Miles: 12.00 |
|
| | Happy Mother's Day. I've eaten and slept more today than anyone in their right mind should. | |
| |
After all my sleep yesterday, I should have been full of energy. I was probably sucking wind due to all the carbs in ingested yesterday. And not the healthy, complex kind....but the simple, white sugar, mixed with oils (the tasty kind).
Out of bed at 4:10, got dressed, did my physical therapy, and headed out the door. It was mid-50's, and lots of fog coming off the fields. Really pretty when the sun starting lighing up the sky with all the reds, oranges & pinks. One particular field I ran by looked so amazing with the low fog on the field blending into the orange sky. It was photo worthy, but I didn't want to stop. So today, that will be my personal "treasure."
My knee brace worked well. I tried running at a tempo I was comfortable with, but was faster than my average. I finished with an 8:55 ap. I was really feeling tired legs after mile 7 when I had to run up the overpass. I tried increasing the pace the last 2 miles, but it was tough. I didn't check my splits to see how they were, I tried just working on running the way I felt. Glad I got the miles in, and I'm pretty happy with the pace. Really happy no knee troubles. |

30 min elliptical
shred level 2

sweating like crazy...had trouble "climbing" up my leg on the ab ripper because it was so slippery. Good workout.
| | Thunderstorms were knocking each other out last night, and kept me up. I was too tired to shut the windows to make it quiet. I found an ear plug, but didn't have the energy to put it in my ear. Cranky tired. Good thing it's hump day!! I was going to do 9, but didn't get out in time, so I only went 8. Tried to do a progressive run. Missed on mile 5 and went up 10 seconds instead of down, but other than that, met my goal. Avg pace was 8:56. Shower & nap, then off to work. Good times. |

3 medium paced miles & ab ripper
Kind of tapering off a little this week. Balancing my need to run, my desire to run long distances, and my body's ability to let me follow through with my dreams.
Plus, saving some energy & looking forward to going out on the high seas with my best mate while we pillage, loot, and search for booty. Bring it ON!!! |

Fun run with Terri! So awesome to be back on the road with my running buddy. Had a great visit- just too bad it was so short.
We took our time on the run, enjoyed the moment, laughed and sweat like crazy (it was so humid)!
MR ran too. He took off after mile one, ready to run tough, but around mile 7, his calf cramped up. It could have been due to lack of training, or maybe it had something to do with the tequila at mile 5? It was right before the miniature horse. Some kind-hearted folks passing out tequila and corona.
We caught up with him right after mile 12. He walked most of the last mile trying to keep the cramp at bay.
It was fun to run without the stress of time, but I think I may try and train for a flat 1/2 PR this fall.

p90x core synergestics and then some fun...Wii Just Dance. I had time for 5 songs, and I crushed MR's high score on "Big Girls."
Gonna be a good day!!! | |
| |
50 minutes on the elliptical, then 15 minutes of stretching. legs are still a bit sore from Sunday.
What I am grateful for today: Bojangle's bo-berry biscuits.
| |
Quick, speedy run before my MRI to try & get the knee just right for it's photo shoot.
First mile was a warm up...9:40, then I had a 7:40 and a 7:20 for the last .6! Fast for me. I was KO'd when I was done, but happy with the speed.
THEN>> When I came in from my run, I had an awesome Birthday surprise! MR made me french toast with real french bread topped with powdered sugar, chocolate syrup, strawberries and blackberries and of course - cake batter ice cream !!!! SOOO sweet!!
Had the MRI, then Thai food for lunch before our 37 mile bike ride extravaganza. We averaged 12 mph, which is good for us. It is humbling to know world class runners travel faster than us on bikes.
Sore legs & sit bones toward the end of the ride, but it was beautiful. Corn is already a couple feet tall in the fields!
After dinner, MR took me to see Water For Elephants. I enjoyed the book, and the movie was good too. Almost as good as that bucket of popcorn :-)
Thanks to all for the birthday wishes. It was a wonderful day!! |

Slower recovery run. Quads have been a little tender since the run on Sunday, so I'm trying to ease them back into running.
Avg pace was around a 9:30. Beautiful sunrise today. If I could figure out how to post photos, I would. Maybe RAD will throw me a bone and put it up here to show y'all.

| | 45 min elliptical Dr said knee was okay, no big problems. Just keep strengthening & building it up. I need to remember to build slowly. Gotta keep working on enjoying the journey & not just focusing on the prize. hoping to get some great pix soon so I can post them on the blog now that I've been schooled by Burt the best blogger boy.

| | Busy morning being a "college parent." Went on a beautiful 11 mile bike ride with MR in the evening. Everything was great except the bugs. I need a mouth visor to keep them out. Or a bee keeper's hat. Maybe Wyatt has an extra one. She's got 5 hives. | |
| | One of the frogs living in my shed. Just working on figuring out this posting photos business!
| |
| |
Just a run. Not fast, but not trying to go slow. I guess this is my auto-pilot speed.
avg pace 9:29. Mostly progressive, but mile 3 (thank you dumb dog at mile 2 for making me run too fast) was slower than mile 2. After that, all good.
Almost home, the sunrise colors were missing today. Feeling cheated not finding any treasures, when what do you know, there on the side of the road was Toonces, the road kill cat.
Ab ripper x at home. Found out today that my new running shorts are see thru when they're wet. Such a great thing that I sweat so much....NOT. |

that's enough for now

My legs are still crying from plyo yesterday. I told them to shut up and quit whining. Or, I tried to tell them...they didn't want to listen.
First mile was slow...10:17. Then I had a couple miles around 9:20-9:00, then built up to an 8:20 on mile 5. Mile 6 I slowed down the first half, and tried to finish fast the last half. Averaged an 8:32.
I got my snooze and off buttons mixed up and got a late start today. The sky was already light enough I didn't need my headlamp at 5:15 am. I left it on for cars to see me. Drivers seemed less happy about moving over and giving me egress. I wonder if it's just cranky wednesday?

Legs are tired. I decided that as sick as it sounds, sometimes I like it when they're sore because it's telling me I'm getting stronger.
Kind of a recovery run. Slow progression run. Avg pace 9:29.
Toonces the road-kill cat is gone. Took to the big highway in the sky.
I like being out when it turns from night to day. Saw a rabbit hopping across my neighbor's yard. I wonder if he's enjoying her garden :-) |
| |
| | Sleep. I took a nap after work yesterday and cried when I woke up because I couldn't go back to sleep due to a meeting. I realized I just needed some sleep, so that's what I did. Looking forward to a nice run tomorrow with Wyatt and the water boy. | |
| |
12 mile country run with Wyatt and the WaterBoy. Beautiful fields of corn starting to grow. It was very muggy for the first 1/2 of the run. Cloud cover, but we were running in clouds too. And the freaking yellow flies are out. They are abundant around swamps and forests. Which was the first 3 miles of our run. In her best effort to help me out, Wyatt tried to save me from the flies by trying to kill them when they landed on me. I got smacked in the back of the head and smacked on the rear. For anyone who doesn't know yellow flies, they're horrid like horse flies, and they swarm us on the roads and bite without mercy. We took a different route back home instead of the planned out & back. It was a good choice. We had some great treasure finds. MR found a reversible watch on the side of the road. Can't tell for sure, but it looks like one side is star wars and the other side is Justin Bieber. It was laying next to a box of "Summer's Eve." Let the jokes come. We also found this. A backbone, head, and one leg. Curious & makes you wonder where the rest of it went. The run wasn't really fast, but it was nice to get out. We had a little rain toward the end, and then the sun came out super hot just as we were ending. Perfect timing, perfect run.

New Minuno Pink Miles: 12.00 |

| | leisurely walk around the hood. 1.5 miles. Looking around to see who has a better lawn than we do. Grubs got to us early and we've got a lot of make-up work to do. The green is green, but the dead is dead! |
| | Didn't get out early enough, and the heat/sun/humidity got to me after mile 8. There was a lull in the breeze between miles 7.5 and 10.5... a long 30 minutes. Wyatt was playing a/c serviceman helper with her MR, so it was just me and the waterboy. Took a familiar route, but changed it up a little in the middle. I thought it would add more mileage. Kind of glad it didn't in the end. New scenery was nice for a few miles. I finally got a photo of the cows today. I try and get them in the mornings, with the sun rising behind them, but they're always far away eating. Today, when we approached them, they were all lining up in a row. Getting ready for the big race evidently, because when I got my camera out to take their photo, it turned into the running of the bulls. Here's my best shot: Black angus with one white long horn. Tasty and extra tasty. The critter below probably isn't very tasty. We'll just say he probably wasn't keeping an eye out for traffic before, but he certainly is now! Reminds me of a little song I used to sing about a frog whose eyes went "Ga- Ga- GA!" Avg pace 9:45. Negative splits- second half faster than the first. I'm good with that since the heat was bad in the second half. Spent a lot of the run reflecting on friends lost in the service of our
country. Wondering how their families are doing and hoping they know I
think of them often. Memorial Day full of memories.

| |
30 minutes on elliptical, then shred level 2.
I was going to do the ab ripper, but I threw in the sweaty towel and fed the birds instead.
| |
Restless night. I've learned over time that it's easier to catch flies with honey than with "other stuff," but when I see someone treat my kids bad, and then blame my child for their lack of self control, I get defensive and mean. I kicked the hornet's nest yetserday, and now my mind is just full of stuff that makes it hard to sleep.
So I knew I needed to run some of those crazy demons out. I did a tempo run today. My goal was to keep it under 9mm and keep pushing. My splits were 9:00, 8:33, 8:30, 8:27. overall a 1 minute faster pace than my Monday run (also only 1/3 the distance).
Stayed in the hood. No cars, no road kill, nothing but me and the angry hornets buzzing in my head. |
New Minuno Pink Miles: 4.00 |

| | avg pace 9:38. Testing and end of year activities & paperwork have me swamped right now. Lots of relationships based on ultimatums are strong and healthy, right? Especially teen-age ones? Teenagers are insane...I should know; I used to be one.

|
| | Went running on the trails on base with MR. 7 miles with him, and 5 miles myself while MR rode his bike and brought me water :-) Lots of photos, but no time to post them yet. Will update later. Busy getting ready for company and graduation. Life feels exhausting right now, and too busy for my liking.

| | Seminary graduation and cake. More than 1 piece of cake, but only 1 graduate. | |
| | MR went running with me this morning since he has the week off for graduation & company. We went out and enjoyed the beautiful morning. Avg pace 9:29. Super dead scrambled up orange kitty on the side of the road. Sorry no photo for today, but I have a feeling he'll still be there next time I run by. Didn't look like he was going anywhere.

| | No running today, I needed 6 hours of sleep and had to sacrifice exercise. So I'm posting a photo of a blackhawk uh60 at the Sicily drop zone. They were doing airborne jumps out of the helicopter. 3 jumpers on each side. This is a photo of the helicopter taking off. I never tire of watching the paratroopers jump out of aircraft and parachute down. It's amazing. And of course, here's my favorite jumpmaster :-) I don't know how to get the photo upright. I guess I need another tutorial in photobucket. I fixed it there, but it won't copy correctly. 2 mile walk through the hood in the evening.
| |
| | Legs still sore from p90x plyo on Tuesday. It seems like I just can't get used to that video. Had a good run. Saw a little lightening, but it was nice outside. Good breeze to cool off the humidity. 74 degrees at 5 am. Woo-hoo. I ran to the overpass, where I tried some sprints uphill, then went down the other side, and sprinted back up. Happy overall with the pace. Not any real good treasures on the roadside today, but I took a photo along the roadside where I have a pretty view. It's a little grainy because it was too dark for my ipod w/o a flash. But you get the general idea. Wheat was just cut on the field on the right, and corn is growing on the left.

| | 30 min elliptical and ab ripper. It's been a while since I did ab ripper, and it was tough. Graduation, Red Lobster, Nap.
| |
| | Ran with Wyatt- MR was a good waterboy. It was wicked warm by 7:30 am when we started out. I was ready to quit at mile 2, but felt better after getting the first 4 out of the way. We went slow and took a few walking water breaks. Total mileage was over 10, but only 9.5 for running. There is a huge swamp of cypress trees that we run by (the alligator swamp), which is now filled with water lillies. It's beautiful, but what I thought was really neat was how the little water pond in the ditch has water lillies in it too. So that's my treasure for the day. That and the 2 shotgun shell casings we found.

Had to get up at 230 to take the buccaneer boy to the airport. Got home in time to go to work. Running just ain't gonna happen today.
I had considered a bike ride in the afternoon, but got roped into putting up the new coop for baby Mojito. Here's our newest addition:
My daughter felt bad taking the chick away from it's mother, and said she was going to sleep outside on the porch with the chick all night. Then, 10 minutes later, she came inside without the chick. She said, "Yeah, that idea went out the window after the chick pooped all over my hands." I had to laugh.
| |
And my miles are piling up for the week......NOT.
The cold I've been fighting off has crept into my chest. I just didn't seem wise to get out and run. I did 20 min on the elliptical and I'm taking my vitamins.
Last day of work till August :-)
Here's a photo from last Saturday that sums up how I've been feeling:
| |
| | walk around the hood in the evening with MR. 2 miles |
| |
I finally woke up feeling better. Man, it's been a long week. I decided to take it easy, so I just ran around the neighborhood. Went out around 6:30. Still cool, and the sun was up so I got to leave the headlamp at home. My watch was dead, so I borrowed MR's. He has different settings on his, so all I could see was the miles and total time. I was going to run 4, then decided I'd make it 40 minutes instead. When I finished and went to 6.check the splits on the watch, I realized he'd had it set for bike instead of run. So I'm not sure what my splits were. My average speed however, was 6.7mh. Oh well. The little calculator on the side of the blog says that 40:00/4.52= 8.51. I guess I'll take that. I came home and stretched out and then did 30 minutes on the elliptical. I'm hoping I'll get a bike ride in today too before the rain comes. I'd like to be able to ride my bike to walmart to return redbox and pick up some photos, but the traffic in that part of town is freaky scary. I did see a little gray kitten dead on the side of the road, but it made me sad and I didn't want to take a picture of it. Poor kitten. We've got too many stray cats here. I'll quote the great Bob Barker, "Remember folks, don't forget to spay and neuter your pets." So instead of dead kittens, I'll put up a photo of the pink dinosaur we saw on our trail run 2 weeks ago. There was a tornado that went through the houses that are along the trail. Someone must be missing this ugly critter. I will call him trail treasure #2.
|
| |
| | 14.95 mile bike ride with MR. Running an errand and getting exercise at the same time. Then we went car shopping for the rest of the day. I loathe car shopping. I did get to eat at Chubby's Tacos, however, so evidently I can be bribed for the cost of a Chubby's fish taco.

| | Hot and humid. After 4 miles, I felt like I was running in a sauna. My pace slowed down, and I had to take a couple walk breaks to cool off. The occasional shade and breeze was the only thing that saved me. Considering the heat, humidity, my lack of running this week, and still not 100% back from the cold, I'm pretty happy with my run. We had lots of fun things to look at. Baby horses Baby cows And decay dog. He was in an area where there weren't any houses. Wonder how he got all the way out there. From the look of his collar, he belonged to someone. :-(
In the afternoon, we were lucky enough to go to the National Hollerin' Contest. So much fun and so many memories. There will be video posted when I can figure out how to share it. All I can say is "Whhhhhooooooooooo-eeeeeeeeeeee."

| | Happy Father's Day. 10 mile bike ride with MR. And watching the video from the National Hollerin Contest over and over again. Here's my favorite little bit. It starts just after the lady is telling a story about how her grandfather asked her if she could holler like a baby pig to help bring the mamma pig back home to the farm. Enjoy! http://s1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff396/quietpirate1/?action=view¤t=1308530978.mp4

| | Didn't get out as early as I should. The heat was already nasty. Thank goodness for breeze. MR ran with me. We headed out for 6. He was KO'd after 4. I ended up running the last 4 myself. We saw a dead mouse, a dead bird that seemed to be waving it's wing at us as we ran by, and of course orange kitty...who is pretty much just a head and patches of fur on the roadside now. Since I've had too many requests to not post photos of orange kitty, I'll post something just as creepy... It's another selection from the National Hollerin' Competition. It's a little ditty the man called the "key" holler. Listen for the monkey and the donkey in the holler! http://s1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff396/quietpirate1/?action=view¤t=1308621795.mp4

| | what a nice difference it makes getting out an hour earlier. It was almost pleasant this morning!
quick out & back- nothing spectacular, just a nice breeze and 2 dead snakes. They were little snakes, so I didn't stop for photos. I tried to make it a progressive run. avg pace 9:12. splits were: 9:55, 9:33, 9:24, 9:25, 9:00, 8:22, 7:19 (last .22). So progressive enough, just that one 9:25 to put me off. I will blame it on the dog that ran out in the road and I had to turn around and yell at him to go home. Surely that took more than 1 second? And now to deal with the little gem of a man who sold me a lawnmower that quit working after I drove it around the yard once. He was wearing a hat that said Jesus all over it. Not sure how I feel about that right now.

National Whitewater Center- more fun than Disneyland. No running, but we did: 4 hours of Whitewater Rafting Canyon Crossing -walking on wires across a ravine holding onto floppy ropes, then zipline back across the ravine. Also, obstacle course on wire with ropes.
4 story drop on the superjump Rock climbing. I actually made it up to the top of the "medium" difficulty line. Woohoo!
After a full day of all this fun stuff, we were exhausted and went to Steak & Shake for dinner. Love that place :-p
| |
| | Back at the National Whitewater Center in Charlotte. Sore from yesterday, but ready for more fun!! Ran 3 miles around the rapids course..or 30 minutes, I didn't have my garmin, so I just went for 30 minutes & figured it was close enough. Then we went whitewater rafting first thing in the morning, kayaking on the Catawba river, back to the Canyon Crossing ropeline obstacle course with zipline at the end, and rode the bikes around the rapids course 4 times, around 4 miles. The trails were closed because of all the rain the previous night. They want to preserve the integrity of the trails for the Xterra event coming next month!! We just finished putting on our water shoes for another rafting trip, and as we were going to our 4:30 show time, we saw that they'd opened the trails. So we bagged the 4:30 trip and got back on the bikes. We did around 30 minutes on the green trail, which is honestly adventurous for me, and then MR talked me into going on a blue trail. I had to walk the bike down one super steep little part, and up a couple of super steep parts, but all in all, it was actually really fun. 1 hour total bike time on the trails. Not sure of the miles. My arms & legs all got a workout.
Here's a photo of MR and I on a flat part of the trail that went along the Catawba River. Then one more river rafting trip where we had lots of fun and ended up swimming a couple of times. Great times. I'd recommend the US National Whitewater Center as a great vacation spot for couples & older kids to anyone!! It's in Charlotte, and if you're coming in the summer time, let me know because I'll meet you there!!!! http://usnwc.org/

| |
| | traveled home from Charlotte and returned to a yard full of tree debris & pine cones. Took 2 hours to clean it all up. That was my workout for the day. We missed some wicked storms. Nice to be home.
|
| | Ran 3 to meet up with Wyatt, then we ran 6. I haven't run with Wyatt in a long time. It was nice to catch up a little while we ran and found treasures. MR was the best waterboy ever, as usual. Photos of snakey-snake and Pooped out 'Possum below. Not picutured: the mouse, the bird, and the little box turtle that we saved as he was making his way across the road.

| | I'm reading the book Born to Run. I'm considering the value of strengthening the muscles in the feet. Not converted to barefoot running, but strengthening the muscles by walking barefoot seemed like a good idea. So I went our for what was supposed to be a 1.2 mile walk around the hood. The asphalt is so rocky that it was painful navigating all the rocks. I went about .45 miles out, and then the road got really bad, so we turned around & walked back home. I need to work on toughening up the bottoms of my feet before I do that again! Since it's Sunday, I decided to post a nice photo of the blossom on my okra plant instead of dead animals.
|
| | Got out early with Wyatt this morning. We ran the 4 mile hood loop forward then backward. Saw 2 other people out running. Evidently my neighbors aren't all the lazy folks I'd had them pegged to be. At least not 2 of them :-) And lucky for us, just as we were about to finish, we found our treasure for the day: It's a headless Spiderman! MR has attached him to the side of my "Treasure Box" so he's hanging off the edge with his spiderweb shooter hand pointing out. If you listen really closely, you can hear the song "I'm Awesome" playing in the background.
|
|
| | cross-training day. 30 minutes of sweating in the garage on the elliptical followed by 45 minute pilates video. It's been a while since I did the pilates and I'd forgotten how much I enjoy it. After that, I went to Wyatt's house and swam in her pool. You can interpret the word swim to mean "sat on a float." In the afternoon I got to drive to Raleigh with MR so we could pick up our oldest buccaneer at the airport. He's been in Thailand for the last 2 weeks having the vacation of his life. We are supremely lucky to have such a great family!!
|
| | Got up, did my PT exercises and went out for a run. It was very humid this morning- almost foggy! But it was cooler too; only 70 degrees! It stayed overcast all morning, so that was a nice relief from the sun. I was worried that I wouldn't see any road kill, because I'd gotten to mile 4 without a sighting. So I took a photo of the cypress swamp with the beaver dam in the front of it. It's probably hard to see, but there are lilly pads & flowers all over the back half of the swamp in the trees. I did end up seeing 2 really smashed up snakes after I took this photo, but decided to keep on running instead of stopping for their photos. The run was kind of a pace/interval run. 2 miles warm up, 2 miles faster, 2 miles slower, 2 miles faster, 1 mile cool down. Overall AP was 9:10. Splits were: 9:37, 9:34, 8:43, 8:57, 9:17, 9:14, 8:37, 8:26, 10:04. The last fast mile was tough on me, but I made it. Good run!

| | Wyatt and I went and played with the kids on base this morning. MR invited us to go on a ruck march with him & his team, so we headed out early with our backpacks, phone books & rocks. We did almost 4 miles on the trails hauling our packs. Mine was a little too heavy for me. I put in a granite rock, and it ended up weighing around 40 pounds. Next time, I'll use phone books or smaller rocks. I managed to do okay on the trails, but later that night, my knee was sore. After our packs were off and the kids were getting ready to go to work, we went for a quick run on the trails. Running seemed like a breeze without the extra weight!! It was 3 miles on some hilly trails, and we did pretty good. Lots of fun. Then I came home and decided it was finally time to watch Gone With the Wind. I watched it while I baked chocolate banana bread and a huge batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. It took me almost the whole 4 hours, but I finished both of them :-)
|
| |
| | 32.75 mile bike ride with MR. We took a few new side roads, just to see where they would go. We're going to work our way back up to another 50 miler again. We aren't hard core bikers...obviously.
No real great road kill treasures, but we did find a light housing (bulb included) for the treasure box.
| |
| | Didn't run today...want my knee to be great for my 4th of July run on Monday. MR did p90x core synergestics with me. Then we did yardwork for hours. Blech. | |
| | Happy 4th of July! Went for a run with Wyatt to start the day off. My legs were so stiff and sore from what I think was the p90x I did Saturday that it took every ounce of effort I had to made the 12 mm pace that first mile. After mile 4, things finally starting feeling better. Not a lot of road-kill today. In fact, I didn't see any at all. But we did see a rabbit sitting in the middle of the water in a swampy area. We thought it was a strange rock at first, but it was certainly a rabbit. We threw some rocks near by to see if it was even alive. On the third rock, it finally twitched it's ears. What was wrong with that rabbit? Two options: 1- It is a rare breed of swamp rabbit, or 2- It was bitten by a snake and was paralyzed in place and the snake was waiting for it to die. The only thing it could move was it's ears. I'm going to have nightmares about that poor snake. Then, we got to see the p-town parade, and it was wonderful in all it's very specials ways that it can be wonderful. I was so excited when a guy with a bag of candy stopped by along the parade route to see if my daughter wanted to ride on the back of his ATV and throw out candy along the parade route! My baby was in the p-town parade. (Yes, I did happen to know who the guy was, I'm a bad mother, but not an irresponsible one). And then last the best of all, waiting in line for 20 minutes in 90 degree heat waiting for the oil to heat up so I could buy a delicious funnel cake. It was worth it. Tasty BBQ and swimming at Wyatt's house in the pm. Perfect day!

| | 1 hour on the elliptical followed by p90x legs & back. Then housework & laundry. I need a housewife to take care of these things for me. | |
| | Humid just begins to describe the wet air outside today. My garmin battery shut down just as I was headed out the driveway. I decided to just run as I was. I checked the time when I left, and when I got back. Total time was 1:47, and I ran around 10 miles and walked about 1/2 mile. I did some fartleks from mile 2.5 to mile 5.5. I ran between the power poles fast/easy/fast/easy. I had to walk a bit after finishing the fartleks. I stopped and stretched a couple of times too, adjusting the knee brace once. I was glad I had it on today. Just about the time I started walking, this dog started following me. He never barked once. He seriously just wanted to run circles around me. Which is what he did for the next 5 miles, all the way home. I am not sure which house he came from, and he doesn't have any tags on his collar. But what he lacks in identification and brains, he makes up with the number of fleas jumping on him. He is a cute dog, but I don't want a dog. He ran out in front of cars while I was running. He tripped me twice as he ran right into my legs, and tried to lick me too many times. He's hanging out in my yard right now waiting for animal control to come pick him up. If someone wants a cute, friendly, not so smart dog, let me know. I'll mail him to you.
Legs are tired. I keep thinking they'll get stronger and quit feeling so tired. Maybe they need a couple days of rest.....or some ice cream. I'll try the ice cream first :-)

| | 6 recovery run miles with Wyatt. Humidity is crazy lately. It storms during the night, and leaves a cloudy wet fog all across the sky in the morning. Didn't see any interesting critters. Just some people out looking for their Chihuahua that had escaped. Didn't see the dog either. Hope they find him.
Ab Ripper X when I got home. Now I want a nap :-)

New Minuno Pink Miles: 6.00 |
|
| | After my treadmill yesterday, I wasn't going to run, but the only machine available was the treadmill. I started out slow, and worked my way up to a little faster than slow. My knee bothered me yesterday after the hill work on the treadmill, so today I kept it at 1.5 and changed to the bike when it opened up. 30 minutes on the bike. |

| | 1 hour on the elliptical followed by some open-water activities. |
| |
Found that I enjoy running little circles much more than I do running on a treadmill. 6 laps to a mile wasn't so bad. I just ran for an hour and tried my best to keep track of the laps. Lots of walking today in hot & humid places. Hiking up & tubing down. Good times.

Running in circles again. I'd take it over the treadmill any day!! Beautiful views, lots to learn, lots to eat. Then, I found a way to make the outside feel cooler; try some fresh
habanero salsa. When your mouth is on fire, it makes 98 degrees feel
cool.

| | Pirate's Log: Headed back toward land today. Woke up early to run with the sunrise, then ran on the poop deck around & around till the poop was dizzy. 5-6 am; 76o with 90% humidity. No sprinklers, but I was dripping wet without them by the time I was done.
I was slow today. Not intentionally. Sometimes I start out slow for the first mile, then I can pick it up. Not today. Every mile but the last was over 10. It felt good to be out running again after 5 days off, but I was disappointed my pace was so slow.
Didn't see anything dead, but I did see an awesome old shoe in the middle of the road. Just one, but with a nice leather upper. |

| | Hot, humid, sweaty six. Pace was 24 seconds faster than Thursday, and I was happy I could keep the miles under 10 min, but it was a tough six miles. I was out early, so I did get to see an awesome sunrise. The pix is somewhere in my ipod. And my ipod is somewhere in this house.

| | "Your mother wears combat boots"
went for a 1.3 mile walk in my new combat boots. Yep, QP has her own pair. I thought I could wear them 3 miles without breaking them in a couple of weeks ago and I've got blister scars to prove how wrong I was. So today we went slow and I'm working on getting my feet tough & the shoes soft so I can use them on our ruck marches in the future. It's hot & humid here. Have I mentioned that yet this summer?
| |
| | THE GOLDEN CALF 10K Out here in Babylon, running with the Gentiles. Good times, good times. We went running through the fields (not really sure what kind). Here's Wyatt: and here's a little pond we found out in the fields:
|
| |
| | Out early again with Wyatt. We ran to the p-town blinky light & back. There was an awesome dead raccoon in the grass on the side of the road- rigor-mortis had set it & he had his little paws straight up in the air zombie style. I didn't get a photo, so I am hoping he'll still be there tomorrow.
Slow miles, but I'm not sure the heat is the best time to push. I'm just maintaining a base until it cools off a little and I can take more than an hour at a time. I got home and my humidity measuring device said it was 98% humidity and 72 degrees.

| | Very hot, but a little breeze now & then made it nicer than most other mornings this week that were cooler. I took quick water & cool down breaks every 2 miles to keep from over heating. It worked really well. I feel like I could have run longer. I also ran slower. Avg pace was around 10:10.

early run by myself. I wanted to run around 8, but just after mile 6 my knee popped a couple of times so I stopped running & walked. While I was walking, I noticed this guy right on my path. I'm wondering if I would have noticed him if I was running (I'm not always paying attention). It might be hard to see, but he's a copperhead. MR said it looks like he just ate, so that's probably why he just hung out there & didn't bother with me. I stayed far away anyway.

26 miles on the bike. I rode at a pace that was a real workout for me for 1 hour. It ended up only being 16 miles per hour. I have no idea how Brent goes 24mph for 1 hour. In my defense, I'm not riding a road bike. But I did get a good workout. After the first hour, I slowed down and enjoyed the rest of the ride home. It took me 50 minutes to ride the next 10 miles home, but I got to see lots of pretty crops growing, the cows, the horses, and got lost for a little while on a dirt road that I thought was a short cut.
Here's some pix I took along the way: 1- one less dog to chase me on the roads...poor fella 2- morning glory growing along the corn stalks 3-Cotton flower blooming 4-sorghum plants (it's grown for a sweetner that's like molasses...kind of). It's really only about 3 feet tall.
| |
| | 32.6 miles on the bike with MR. Pace was slower than yesterday, but it was for 2 hrs 22 minutes total riding time. My avg pace was around 14 mph. We explored new roads and found out where some roads went that we'd passed by before. Rode by a farm stand selling peaches, and I almost stopped to get one to eat. I wish I would have; I'll be those peaches were delicious! We saw a giant moth at the ghetto gas station we stopped to get water at (yes, those are bars on the windows). We found a treasure as well, but it was the kind of treasure you leave behind and just take photos of for proof. I shall call her Soysan, after the soy bean field we found her in....too bad it wasn't a cabbage field! There was a can of yellow paint next to her, and an old oriental looking rug. I'm sure there's a good story there. Any ideas?
| |
| | 30 minute elliptical in the am. 2 mile walk through the hood with MR & Terri in the pm. It was still wicked hot, and I found some nice sprinklers to run through. I still had my dress on- we all thought it would have been great if I'd been wearing my combat boots too. Ah, an idea for another day... | |
| |
dead frog run- 6 miles with Terri. Wonderful, wild, wet run. Wonderful because of the company, Wild because of Mr Toad's Wild Ride that didn't end so well, and wet because I was sweating so much!!
Anyone need some new uppers for their nikes? I found these during one of our little "walk breaks" today. We surely needed them due to the humid heat sauna.

| | 45 minute elliptical. nice company on the phone with RAD. She's always got good stories to make the time fly by. | |
| | Wyatt and I went out for our long run this morning. It was considerably cooler and we had a little breeze to make it even nicer. I put water out at mile 6.5, and we stopped to fill up, but we would have been okay without it. It really convinced me that the heat does make running more difficult, because it was so easy today. I took my bike out to pick up the waterbottles after we got back, so I had a 9 mile bike ride too. I tried riding fast to keep my heart rate up & my muscles moving. Not sure what my bike pace was, but it felt like 100% effort.
|
|
| | MR and I went out for a bike ride after sleeping in...yea!!! We weren't out for long when we saw a little critter in the cotton fields. A puppy tent! We rescued him and he's safe in our garage now. There wasn't a home within a mile or more, so we didn't feel bad about rescuing him. We also rescued a big brown spider living in him...but had to leave him at the sanctuary we ended up at later in our ride. MR also spotted a nice place to get his photo taken. His quote for the photo was, "King of the Castle" in his best Borat voice. No treasures to take home from this stop except the photo.
We were out maybe 12 miles from home, and the heavens opened up and poured rain on us. It was neat watching the sheets of rain blow across the fields, but after a mile or so, we were drenched and the rain wasn't letting up. If you've never been in a southern downpour, it's not like any other kind of rain storm around. We saw a church and took a little break in the covered driveway they had. That's where we found the spider stow-away and left him behind. After 20 minutes and 1/2 a bag of gummy worms, the rain let up a little and we headed home. It was the first time we'd been caught in a rainstorm on our bikes. Other than the unpleasant wet-seat problem, it wasn't too bad. It was actually kind of fun in a "trying something new" kind of a way. Then we got home and made peach jam with our little buccaneer. Tasty-tasty.
| |
| | My shoes from Saturday's rain storm are still wet! I'm not sure they'll ever get dry. It was a lovely morning with much cooler air than normal this time of year. I ran & MR rode along as the waterboy/company. We didn't even get one house away when we saw this:
Kool-aid opposum strikes again! He's really just a young one too. Not 1/2 as big as the one in almost the same spot this spring . I took the photo mostly for bye-wing. Hope she's back on the blog today. We took the shady route and I tried to keep the pace up. Wasn't really sure I could do it, but I managed a 9:04 average pace, and I was thrilled. Progressive except for one mile. First was a 9:22 and the last was an 8:27 (for the .85). There's a little town I ran through...here's the sign: Can anyone beat a "population 11" sign? Sad thing is, of those 11, I know that one of them is on the national sex offenders registry. Luckily the town is only 1/2 a mile long & I can run by quickly.

Jillian shred level 2 and 20 minutes running on the beach. Then I floated in the water and watched for sharks. I swear I saw one! MR saw it too. At first I thought it was a man snorkeling, but then I realized it was a fin, not a snorkel, and then there was another fin at the end of the man.... aaagggghhhh. Shark week will do that to you....even 2 weeks later.
Last day of freedom. Back to work tomorrow. Back to the headlamp and reflective vest. Hopefully it'll be cooler at 4:30 in the morning :-) |
| |
| |
It IS cooler at 5 am than it is at 7!! I really enjoyed the run this morning and was pleased to see the moon up to greet me as I headed out the door.
Avg pace was 9:11. I am so happy to see paces under 10mm.
I didn't see anything dead (or alive) on the road. One dumb dog that barks a lot but so far seems harmless. But I did get to see a beautiful light show with the sun starting to light up the sky. Pretty reds & oranges. Nice back to work treat. |
| |
| |
Morning time, how precious.... I got to see a snake today. Squished on the road right where I was running. I'm glad the car found him first. I just ran..slow at first, then faster. It was progressive. Avg pace was 9:22. Not my best for the week, but I'm not complaining. I'm just glad it's under 10 and my knee is behaving.
Stopped to stretch my quads (for the knee) 1/2 way through and saw a sign (photo will be posted later)... it says " Best Price On Doublewide homes! 910-4248600 0 (zero) deposit."

p90x core synergestics... it's been a while since I've done this, and it was really tough. I guess I needed it.
On the sad, sad news front; the 24 hour ultra I've been looking forward to for 11 months sold out before I got a chance to register. I just want to cry, throw a fit, and scream until I get a spot. I may need to resort to pirate activities, like stealing other people's entries. The thing that really makes me mad is that there are lots of people who sign up and only walk for an hour, then stop. Why do they get my spot? Why, why why?????? Maybe i can talk them into giving me the other 23 hours?
| |
| | 10 marvelous miles with Wyatt & the WaterBoy. Pace was slow, but I've read that's what we are supposed to do when we go on long runs. Usually I'd say 10 miles isn't all that long, but for the last few months, it's the longest I've gone. Nice run, nice weather.

Ran around the hood today. Listened to the frogs croak in the dark. Saw 2 cats run across a yard, and saw 2 other runners out. That really took me by surprise. Not used to seeing anyone else out on my morning run.
avg pace 9:37. Just a little slower than what I'd wanted, but it was tough this morning. |

Supposed to do speedwork today, but my first mate showed up for duty, so I went with him for a regular run.
Best part of the run was that the road was just re-paved the day before. I have always hated the stop-light run because the road was so gnarly. And now it's so pretty and flat and smooth. I actually got to look around and enjoy the dark instead of focusing on which way my ankle was going to twist. It's Christmas in August!!! Not even any lines on the road yet.. just beautiful black road.
6 miles with MR, 1 mile alone after we got home. avg pace 9:36. |

Speed work today. Mercy me, it's been a while. I didn't have my garmin set to give me slow down/speed up warnings, I just figured it would take everything I had to make three 8:30 miles out of 7.
So I did one mile warm up, and then ran as fast as I could, trying to get an 8:30. I felt like I was going to barf, but I finally finished the first fast mile, and my pace was a 7:32. Well, that's a nice surprise. My recovery 800 was slow- I was spent! Then I stopped & stretched my quads and set my watch to keep me between a 9 and 8 pace. The next speed mile was a cake walk compared to the first. 8:17 avg pace. Then another recover, then a 8:08 mile. Then I had a nice long recovery/cool down.
First Day of school today. Saw some little kids waiting in the early dawn light for the bus. Cute little critters. Speaking of critters, there were bats circling me as I finished my last speed mile. I saw one fly across my headlight, and thought it was pretty neat to see a bat so close to me, and then it happened again. I guess I was starting to smell like rotten fruit or something.

Warrior Dash (3.5 Miles) 00:43:08, Place overall: 1807, Place in age division: 112 | | Since we'd never gone to prom before, we thought this run would be the perfect opportunity to dress up in our prom clothes and go "out" together. I've heard about people who get dirty at prom, but I don't think this is what they had in mind! MR was the prom king. He'd gone shopping & found my prom dress at the thrift store for $6. I teased my hair & "bumped" it myself :-) The pearls I found on the ground as we were walking to pick up our packet. They were really trashed & the strand was broken, but I put it together like gus-gus & jacque from Cinderella! I wore my pretty dangly earrings (some lady asked me if I was afraid of running with my earrings on. I was wearing a prom dress and she was concerned about my earrings????) MR also bought himself a fabulous plastic boutineer and made a little black & white floral wrist corsage for me to wear too. He thought of everything!
I had to alter the dress a little and gather up the sides of the bottom. The wind is blowing in the photo (hurricane byproduct)and it looks funny, but it actually looked nice considering it had been altered by me. We got off to a good start, but it wasn't long before that wool & cotton suit got MR overheated, and then the obstacles came and kicked my trash. Over4 foot metal barriers, then under wooden fences, over & under, over & under...I thought it would never end! Between me being slow on the obstacles and MR overheating & needing to walk, we had plenty of time to enjoy the course and take our time. Cargo nets, crawling in black-out conditions in the dirt, climbing up 20 foot walls, cargo nets, tire straddles, wading through a river & climbing over logs, jumping over fire and low crawling in the mud under barbed wire. It was lots of fun, and wearing a dress & suit made it "extra special." Here's the after "kiss." We rock. It was the BEST prom ever!!!

| | Seminary is tripping me up. MR was doing airborne ops this am & couldn't help drive.
I had time to run 4.25 miles, then drove to church, ran the other 3 at the park near the church, then drove home & got ready for work. Everything was rushed. Good day for speed work I guess. warm up, 3 miles speed (8:29, 8:29, 8:22). Then when I got to the park, I had to warm up again (I tried starting fast & it my knee wasn't on board). So another slow mile (10:10) then a fast mile (8:02) then a cool down. Avg pace was an 8:44.

| | easy slower run. maybe recovery run is the right term. another morning without MR to help with the seminary drive, so I had to break my 7 miles up into 2 shifts. It's either that or wake up at 4 am... and I'm not in the mood for 4 am yet. So I ran 1.8 out on my fancy new paved road, turned around & came home. Then drove to the church & ran 3 plus more miles at the park. Buccaneer 2 doesn't get her license till February. I hope I don't have to do the double running am shift often. shiney eyes staring out at me from the grassland along the cow fence. Orange kitty in the grass. Just chilling and keeping an eye on me. Good morning little kitty friend. Wanna take a ride on my pirate ship and be my pirate ship rat catcher?

| | slept in a little, ab ripper x, then walked at the park while little one went to seminary. Long run tomorrow & I wanted to have a day break for my knees. | |
| | Longest "long" run I've been on for a long time. Waited too long to get out, and got caught in the sun. The temps weren't high, but with the direct sunlight and humidity I got overheated a little and had to take a couple breaks in the shade. Wyatt ran with me, and water boy kept us company. So did 2 snakes. One large black field snake slithered across the road around mile 5, then around mile 8 Wyatt did a hop, jump, little yelp as she jumped over one on the road. She was running just behind me, and I'm a little concerned that I didn't see it first, but in my defense, it was small. We got a photo of him as he was in the grass along the roadside. He's maybe only 12 inches long- a baby.
I'm no herpetologist, but Wyatt said it looked like some variety of rattle/poisonous snakes, and I'm taking her word for it!

| | Lovely labor day run. Nice to sleep in and have the weather still be nice...at least until the last mile when the cool, moist air saw the sun and heated up like a sauna. But it was just the last mile. MR brought the water & rode the bike. We did P-town run- saw a squirrel with a smashed head and lots of flies, but didn't want to stop my momentum and take a photo. Avg pace was just under 9:50. Not really fast, but I was pleased that I was able to pull the last mile at a 8:58. So long, summer. See you next year!

| | my legs are so sore from plyo. I don't do it often enough and my body never adjusts, so when I do it, it always leaves me hurting. I hope all the soreness is good for something. It's definitely not good for sitting up & down on a chair in a skirt.
So my speed workout today was not speedy at all. I did try to go faster when I was running up the overpass hill, and the last mile home. That's all the fast I could muster out of these legs. When I was in the shower after the run, I had a bad burning sensation on my collarbone. Something bit me in 3 different spots. It's like I've got 3 big spider hickeys on my collar. Sweet!! Just like my friends in high school :-)

| | Had to do the full seminary ride today, so I got up & out earlier than usual. I don't like splitting the run, so I did what I could in the time I had. Lucky for me, I got to sleep in the car during seminary and make up for some of that lost morning time. Good thing I keep a stuffed opossum in my car to double as a pillow for occasions just like this! Around mile .6 I was shuffling along (at a 10:59 pace) and trying to warm up my sore legs when I stumbled a little on something. Like I ran my foot across the top of something. Then I heard this little faint rattling sound and decided to run away quickly instead of stopping to turn around and find out what it was that was making such a noise. It could have been anything, but in my head it was a little rattlesnake, so I just ran on as fast as my tired legs could carry me. On the way home, around mile 4, there was a huge noise in the soybean field I was running along. Something big was running away from the road into the beanfield. I'm sure it was chupacabra. It didn't bother going after me, because they primarily attack goats, and I am not a goat. Ahhh...they joys of running in the dark.

| | My legs are still sore from Tuesday. What gives? I got up a little early & did the p90x stretch video before another seminary drive. This time I went and did my shopping at the store instead of sleeping in the car. Thank goodness for 24 hour Super Wal-Mart! Imagine my delight when I saw 2 boys who graduated in June at WalMart at 6:20 am. They never could get to school on time, but here they were at the store before the crack of dawn. They yelled out to me that "We're gonna get smashed drunk today because we don't have to go to school!" (Oh, I am so proud.) Then they took off for the pharmacy section of the store. I guess since they're not 21, they're just going to buy a lot of nyquil. Precious little lambs.

| | I ran 4 with Wyatt, who had a church breakfast and knife sale to go to. It's good to talk and catch up on the week, but 4 miles isn't enough some days (like today). Then I dropped off some water, came home & changed my socks. They were wet from running in the fields (dew). Checked on MR who didn't get in till 4 am, so I gave him the morning off. I ran my 9 miles swamp route, and added a mile in a neighborhood I run past. I made sure I had some $ in my shorts so when I ran past Wyatt's church I could buy something from their bake sale. Unfortunately, it was all indoors, so I missed out on the baptist brownies (which are sinfully fabulous!!). I had a good run. With 3 miles left, my legs were feeling tired, but I managed to get a couple faster miles in at the end. I just really wanted to get done with the run, so I hurried home. After mile 14, I walked 1.4 miles to cool down and got my legs used to working a little longer so maybe next week's 16 won't come as a complete shock to their system. Beautiful weather. The direct sunlight was getting warm, but the air was cooler, and any little bits I was able to get in the shade were marvelous. avg pace with Wyatt was 10:11. for the 10 miles alone, avg pace was 9:34. Last 2 miles were 9:22 and 9:14. It was mostly a progressive run, but a couple of miles I was texting, and they ended up being slower. The texting was a nice distraction though. My music wasn't charged, so I went alone without music or MR...just me and my brain. We did a pretty good job keeping each other company. I saw a dead squirrel who was all smashed except for his fluffy tail, a dead cat that had his face chewed off, and 3 dove hunters walking out of the field. They said they got a few. I saw the boxes they were carrying their prizes in, but not the birds themselves. This blog is getting long. Glad the run is over. Glad I survived. Glad I get to go to the Greek Festival and enjoy baklava and other tasty treats this afternoon. Thank goodness for phyllo and butter!

40 minute brisk walk at the park while buccaneer #2 was in seminary. I ate sooo much junk food yesterday. Bad idea- I feel icky today- no energy. Need to eat like an athelete today so I can be ready for my long run tomorrow.
Those rice crispies, dump cake, snickers minis, donuts, cheeseburgers and curly fries make it so tempting and hard. Staff tailgate party for the big game tonight. Aaarrrrgggghhhhh.... must be strong.....help me Nancy Reagan, help me just say no.
| | A really fun long run, even though I was by myself. MR had to "play" soldier on base early in the morning and Wyatt was going to a tractor show, so I decided to go on base with MR and run around up there for a change of scenery. I ran so I would always have a place to refill my water bottle if I ran out. It was dark and 6 am when I started out. I ran 5 miles and went back to the car to get my water bottle, gu, and use the bathroom. The soldiers were still all standing around in front of the bathroom, so I took and and found a mini-mart to meet my needs a mile later. It was really cool- probably 55 degrees, and a light misty rain fell the whole time. I got to wear my bright yellow rain running jacket. I took the sleeves off and it was perfect- not too hot, not too cold. The best part of the whole run was when I was on Long Street (it is a long street!) and as I headed east on the road, I saw there was a road block ahead. I was worried they wouldn't let me run by, because they were turning cars around. But as I ran past, no one said anything. Then, I noticed ahead that there was another road block. It was puzzling until I saw the water buffalo in the middle of the road, and the table full of water cups. It was the 3rd Saturday Fun 5k!! And soon I noticed they were all headed straight for me. What happened next I can only imagine was a curious twist of fate. The fast runners passed me and were headed to the turn around point, and all of a sudden, it looked like I had already turned around and was in 1st place!!!!!!! I was ahead the whole rest of the way back to the stadium (where the race was supposed to end). It was tempting to not run into the stadium and break through the tape :-) But alas, I had to keep running. I was only at mile 12, and I was supposed to run 16. So I let those fast teen-age boys get the first place medal. But for those few minutes, I was the winner. And that's good enough for me. I decided to run by the commissary so I could get more water and use the bathroom. I wasn't sure how far it would be back to the car (I was running a loop) but I felt really strong and decided that whatever I couldn't run, I would be okay walking back if I had to after doing 16. I ran past our old house we lived in 16 years ago. It's not even a real house anymore- the door has been bricked over and it's become an "addition" to the townhouse next to it. Kind of thought provoking- like that chapter of my life has been closed and a brick wall has closed it off. Which is okay, since it wasn't really a marvelous time of my life, but it did make me think about the things we did in our home. Boy's first birthday, Baby Girl born, first long deployment, and lots of neighbors/friends. Memories got me through the next few miles, and before I knew it, I was running on the grass covered dirt trail along the road that took me back to the car. 18 miles and I felt good. My legs felt sore around miles 12-14, but the soreness didn't really seem to slow me down. I managed to keep a 9:28 pace overall. The last mile was around a 9:17. Not the fastest, but not the slowest either. I would love to post my splits, but when I got home, I couldn't find my garmin anywhere. I don't know where I could have left it. It's kind of driving me crazy wondering where I lost it. I hope the good luck fairy finds it and sends it back my way. After I jumped in the shower water and washed grass seeds off my legs and changed, MR was heading back to the office after finishing their activities. I took his photo as he walked by. I was standing on a hill above him- he's not really a Hobbit.

2 mile walk with MR, trying to stretch out legs- they're a little sore from Saturday.
In the pm- a pilates video. Nice stretching & kind of relaxing. |

4:30 came too early this morning. My legs didn't want to run very fast. I was terribly slow, but just kept going. I think I finally got warmed up around mile 5.
I used MR's garmin since mine disappeared Saturday. He has different settings on his, so I couldn't gauge my pace very well. I felt like I was putting in a 9:30 effort, but all that came out was a 10:00. I was just happy to get the miles in!
Just before I left for work, the good luck fairy called me! He sounded a lot like MR. He said that he found my watch in MR's combat boots. I'm not sure how it ended up in the boots. I'd taken the watch off and driven to the store before he joined me and took off his boots. I'm just so happy to have it back, I wasn't going to look at good-luck fairy in his lucky spot!
I'd brought clothes to walk in after school, but I may just go home and fix dinner. |

first 7 with MR in the rain. Shoes were just a soppy mess. I think they got really heavy because they were wet & that's why my times were slower than last week. That's where I'm putting the blame :-)
Last Saturday was cool and just a light drizzle. This week is was warmer and a real rain. Not the same cup of tea. Wyatt was sick with something all week, so she had to stay home and rest.
Avg pace was 9:41. 13 seconds slower than last week. I guess they can't all be winners. My legs were trashed by mile 13 and at 16, the sun came out and made it humid hot. I had to take off my rain jacket and walk a little bit to cool down.
A few breaks during the run. One at 7 when we stopped at the car for MR to get his bike and pick up the water/gu, then another at 11 to stretch, then another around 14.5 to get more water & use the bathroom, then at 16 to cool off.
There weren't any races going on- so I wasn't running first place up the hill. It made it a little more exhausting running uphill for a whole mile when I didn't have the 1st place winners ribbon on me like last week.
We ran most of the same route I ran last week, but took a couple detours. I think for my 20 miler in a couple weeks, we might try and run Bragg and Pope, making a loop around the airfield. Going to have to scout it out first.
I conquered 2 18 milers in a row (on Saturdays). I'm glad next week is a down week and I don't have a long run Saturday. I'm ready for a little break. And good news- I didn't lose my watch this week either!

I'm not entirely sure why, but I am very, very tired today.
Got up to run, and running wasn't happening. I ran 10 yards and had to stop. I walked, stretched, and tried again. My right quad was tight and my left knee was feeling wonky.
I managed to run 1.5, stretch just a little, then run another 1.5. My stiffness was going away, but I kept hearing a little nagging feeling in my knee and decided it wasn't worth it. So I went inside and did 30 minutes on the elliptical to finish up 1 hour. My agenda said 7 miles. not sure if I'll try to make up the missed miles or not. It's my "easy" week, and I may just bag it. Too much invested now to have an injury sideline me.
It's farmer day at school, so I get to wear my overalls. I love farmer day.

Garmin battery died just as I was leaving the driveway. So I just got to run. Felt good. A few little knee-twangs, but it didn't stop me at all. I think I may just need to get back on the strength training physical therapy bandwagon. I just don't like having to do it in the mornings before I run because I have to wake up 20 minutes earlier, and at this point I refuse to wake up earlier than 4:30.
So maybe I can remember to do my training stuff in the evenings.
It was cool outside this morning. My coldest morning out yet. I had my jacket on w/o the sleeves and with gloves on. The perfect warm-enough combination except for my thumb that was on the outside of my water-bottle carrying hand. It froze out there in the cold all by itself. 39-40 degrees, 80% humidity.
If anger could kill, I would have a dead dog on my hands today. I get so tired of the same dog running out into the road after me every day. I yell at it, and it stops, but then when I turn back and keep running, it runs after me again. My pepper spray is out of juice. I wish the people would just keep the dog in their yard. Why do you let your dog run loose when you live on a 55 mph road? Invisible fence, or something. Maybe I should focus my anger on the owners and see if that gets me any results. They were outside today and heard me yelling "NO!" at their dog. They were whistling for him to come back. Whistling...really?????
Glad the run went well. Wish Monday could be over already. |

I hope it's loud enough to wake up people that let their dogs run out after me in the road. | | Wasn't sure how this was going to work, but I took a last minute invitation for a family retreat week-end at Busch Gardens. Both buccaneers went with us, and the oldest one drove them in a separate car so they'd be able to have a little freedom. It was worth the extra gas $.
MR & I had mandatory training to attend from 9-11, then we had Busch Gardens tickets, and I had 20 miles to run. I almost didn't go- it seemed logistically impossible - but I decided it was too good to pass up.
I went to the hotel gym at 630 when it opened and got 8.5 miles in on the treadmill. I don't know the avg pace. I warmed up for .2 miles, ran between 6 and 6.4 mph for the 8.5 miles, and cooled down for a few minutes.
Then we had breakfast and the training. We took the kids to Busch Gardens, got everyone passes, and then left the kids to their own devices while we went back to the hotel for our run. It was 75 degrees and sunny but a super nice cool breeze made it wonderful weather to run in. And it was an awesome run.Â
We ran from our hotel down past the sheep pasture through William & Mary College, past downtown shops, stopped by the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center for water and potty break, then ran through Colonial Williamsburg. It was so neat running along the cobblestone sidewalks, oyster shell pathways, and dirt roads.Â
Spent the rest of the day walking around Busch Gardens. My legs were screaming at me, but I didn't have the usual soreness the next day, so I'm glad I worked them out.

I slept in till the very last possible minute I could, then I had to drag out all the rain gear & put in my contacts. I could hear the rain coming down while I was getting ready and I was dreading squishy feet. Of course the rain stopped just after I'd started running. Got out to run and my garmin died on me. It was supposed to be my speedwork day. I was in no mood to do speedwork, and with my garmin off, I decided there wasn't much use in bothering to try. Started running, and after a mile I decided I'd just run fartleks in the cul-de-sacs and run regular pace on the straight-aways. I forgot a couple of time to go fast, but finally finished. Around mile 6 I was finally warmed up and felt like running. |

| | Out earlier than usual. Nice chilly morning. The wind was strong going out, and I was glad I'd worn my jacket. Coming home, it was at my back and I got hot. But not hot enough to take off the jacket. It was awesome being out on a clear dark morning with 1/2 the moon up and all the stars. There weren't many cars at all, so I ended up turning my headlamp on the red light setting and enjoyed the darkness. I noticed the big/little dipper up in the sky. It was standing up on the end of it's handle, and the bottom of the handle was pointing the way home. Plus there was a hollowed out dog ribcage with the head attached on the side of the road. It's been a while since I saw some good road-kill. Pretty cool run. |

| | I wasn't in love with the idea of running 20 miles for my long run 2 weeks before show time, so I adjusted my running plan. I decided to run 20 again today and start the tapering next week. My goal for this run was to run the 20 without any stops. I've had potty break/water break/etc stops on all my other long runs, and I wanted to see if I could run the distance without stopping. I was happy that I was able to pull it off. The weather was chilly in the beginning, and around mile 12 I had to take the sleeves off my jacket. I ran in place for 12 seconds while MR helped zip them off the jacket. I'm not counting that as a stop even though I did stop my watch. I love the windbreaker jacket with removable sleeves. I bought it at an expo 1.5 years ago, and have enjoyed having it ever since. I'd recommend one to any outdoor runner. And as an added bonus, if you happen to be collecting things as you run, it will hold up to11 reflective road bumps that have been shoveled off the road with an ice plow and are waiting for a new home in your treasure box. MR rode along as my waterboy the whole way. We took a new route on base and I got to run up to and around the air field. They'd actually put packed mulch down on part of the running path. It was a nice change to run on the spongy surface for a mile. I was ready to get back on pavement by the end, but it was a good change for a while. Most of the run at the beginning was uphill. Then there were some ups & downs. By mile 14, I was in a bad mood and ready to just finish. There was a big hill in front of me, and I knew I still had 4-6 miles left on my run. (I wasn't sure how long it would be to get back). I was using a gu every 5 miles, and I still had a mile to go until my next pick me up. It felt like I was going to have a long hour ahead of me. BUT something magical happened around mile 15.5.... I'm not sure exactly what it was; I think it was a combination of a few things. The path started a nice almost 2 mile descent, so it was all a gradual downhill, I used a gu with 2X caffeine in it (the previous 2 were not caffeinated), and the running fairy came and sprinkled running magic on my legs. All of a sudden, I felt like there was an electric voltage running through my legs and I had all the energy in the world. My legs felt strong and I wasn't tired at all. It was amazing. My pace increased and I was running sub 9 minute miles. I felt it wearing off a little when the road leveled out, and by mile 19 I could tell I was starting to run out of magic a little, but I still managed an 8:38 for my last mile. It was amazing!! I hope I can find that magic running fairy again during the race. I'm hoping she's 6 feet tall with long legs and blonde hair. Avg pace 9:36 for all 20 miles.
Saw the movie "courageous" at the theater. A local church group had rented out the 1:00 show and we were offered free tickets from a lady I work with who goes to that church. It was an amazing movie, and it was neat to share the experience with some co-workers & their families. Plus, free popcorn refills. Salty popcorn is so tasty after a long run.

after I finished getting ready in my room and went out to the kitchen to get my lunch packed for the day, I was treated to a wonderful delight - Littlest Buccaneer had baked cookies for breakfast. Speed work today. Dreading it, but glad when it was over.
1 mile warm up, then 1600 x 8:05 pace, 800 x jog (repeated 4 times). Some days it feels good to run fast.
Total miles - 7.11 so I took out my double gulp cup and got it filled with diet coke to celebrate. Totally coincidental that it happened on Diwali. But when I realized it, I had to smile. |

I've actually been getting to bed on time the last couple of days, and I didn't have as much trouble waking up on time as I usually do on Thursdays.
I did a slow "recovery" run, but wanted to do my 9 mile loop that I haven't done in a long, long time.
I had a good run, and kept the pace around 9:50. It went by faster than I'd expected. No dogs today, just a nice cool morning.
AFter work, I went walking/running with a co-worker who is getting back into shape. We ran .6 and walked 3.4 miles. It was great, and I felt like I had uber energy all afternoon. |

Taper week- I've looked forward to this for so long, and now it doesn't feel right to only run 3 miles. I ran fast (because it was very cold) and got 3.75 in. Avg pace was an 8:22. That's fast for me.
I was going to do more indoors, but I had to drive to seminary, and I got distracted making oatmeal breakfast and fiddling around.
We went out for a little shopping trip in the pm because it was raining cats & dogs and I didn't expect any trick or treaters. By the time we got back at 7:30, the neighbors said all the kids had come and we only had 5 door ringers for the next hour. I guess rain doesn't stop candy-hungry children or their parents. The sad news is, my little buccaneer didn't get to be the queen candy-passer-outer that she wanted to be. The good news is I'd bought good candy this year, and we've got LOTS left over! BAZINGA!!
I did my favorite "just dance" game on the Wii while we waited for trick-or-treaters. I actually got one new high score. |

I was falling asleep last night and wanted to wake up early so I could run a longer (6 mile) run than the "taper plan" had listed for me (3 miles). I feel like I'm not really doing enough.
I decided that if I slept in and woke up later in the morning, I wouldn't have time for a long run. So I just stayed in bed an extra hour. It was marvelous, even though I'm still tired today.
I didn't watch my pace, just the time - so I'd get home in time to shower. The distance ended up being about 3.6 miles. 9:48 pace. I tried to keep an easy pace. I guess I did a good job.
No critters, no crazy animal sounds, but a beautiful dark, starry sky.

Went out after work again with my co-worker. We had a friend join us for her first ralk in years. I'm so proud of both of them!! The middle school was using the football field/track, so we went out in the 'hood. We walked the streets & ran the cul-de-sacs. I'm giving myself a total of .5 miles run. My last speedwork. It must be a mental thing, but I think tapering messes with my head. I usually do 7 miles with speedwork, and it's all good. Today I was feeling tired after 2. I start wondering how I'm going to run the marathon when I am tired after 2. Aaarrrggghhh.
Terri, you'll be happy to know that the orange kitty I saw in the ditch last summer is still hanging around in the underbrush beside the road. I saw him again today, and knew you'd be happy to get some good news.
Got home, drove to seminary and found some missing stuff I'd left in the closet at church, then came home and did my P90X ab ripper x because that's what I do on Tuesday. Then I had some hot cocoa. Hooray.
Went on the track with my 3 co-workers and gave them a workout. We did 1 lap walk, 1 lap with bleachers- running inbetween sets of bleachers, 1 lap walk, 1 lap of run/walk (either 1/2 or 1/4 of the track, either way run 1/2 the track). Then we repeated it all and finished with 2 or 3 walking laps. I ran a couple of laps on the walk/run part, so between those and the bleacher run-betweens, I'm counting 1 mile of running. I walked the bleacher steps because I didn't want to stress my legs out on stairs this week. Maybe next week if I can walk.

Oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day. I've got a beautiful feeling- everything's going my way. ..... and it did!
Awesome things about this run:
1- it didn't start till 8 am. Nice to sleep in a little, and nice to not start at 31degrees.
2- the 1/2 and 8k started before the full. So when it was time for us to check our warm clothes, there were plenty of "left overs" from the other runners we could "borrow" and wear to stay warm with. I found a pair of pull away pants that functioned well as leg-warming chaps for 6 miles. Good stuff.
3- the river. I always love running along rivers.
4-the fall leaves. Beautiful Autumnal show!
5-the company. RAD, Terri, and RAD's B-I-L.
6-the wicked downhill at the end. I've never run a 4:30 pace (even if it was for 3 seconds) before in my life. The poor little girl who walked out right in front of me will forever be traumatized, but there's a reason they announced 10 times NOT to let your kids, dogs, or cats onto the course at the end.
7- the 6 dollar A1 thickburger I'd been looking forward to for a month or so at the end
8-hot tub times with family & friends. |

| | WHAT WAS I THINKING? Yesterday, Rachel said, "you see those green water tanks on the hill? That's High Country." I was NOT thinking clearly and said, "Well, let's run that tomorrow!" BAD idea. We ran from her house, which is 20 yards away from where we were in this pix, and ran up the hill to the houses you see in the background, and up on the side of the mountain. It was crazy steep. uphills like I'd never seen before, and when it wasn't super steep, it was super windy. I'm glad I survived. It was tough!! We saw 4 deer at one house, and another group of them in the brush on the hill. Then we saw a flock of game birds. We were almost home when bada-bing, what do you know? A parade of turkeys!!! The little rooster in front was cock-a-doodle-doing himself crazy, and the toms and hens were gobble, gobble, gobbling in their crazy turkey voices. It was the best thing ever. A Thanksgiving Parade, just for RAD & me!! When we got home, I told RAD's little boy we saw a Turkey Parade and I showed him the photo. He asked me, "Did the turkeys throw candy at you?" Happy Thanksgiving! RAD drove our little band of pirates up to the rec center early in the morning for the race. This was a hilly route! And even though it was an out and back, it felt like it was an all up hill route!! I'll be happy to get back to my flat roads soon! There sure were a lot of people at this run. I was glad they had timing mats at the start and end, because it took us 1:30 to get to the start mat. I'm not used to "racing" a race (I'm just usually along for the fun) but after a while I figured why not? What did I have to lose other than my dignity, pride, and ability to walk the next day? I guess around mile .5 I started seriously running. My garmin wasn't cooperating so I don't know the first .75 split, but after that, I felt like I did pretty good charging up the hills. I finished and RAD & JT were both already finished and waiting for me. We all walked back up the finish hill to run in again with the littlest buccaneer. She was almost finished! Very impressive for someone so young. I couldn't believe how many children were out there running. I've never seen youth like that at a race out where I live in Babylon. There certainly is something special about the youth of Zion :-) As we were approaching the finish line I had to stop and take a photo of the "turkey trotting." I'm just glad I finished before this guy! After the race I asked someone to take our pix, and bless his heart, he managed to switch it to video and I can't figure out how to post it to the blog. RAD has photos on her blog. After the race, they had raffle drawings for all kinds of goodies and they gave out ribbons for fastest runners and ag up to 5th place. I almost choked on my spit when I placed 5th in my ag. I guess all the ladies my age were home cooking dinner like a good wife/mother should be doing. I've never gotten a ribbon before and certainly not one for 5th place (who knew they even made ribbons that said 5th place?). So now I have a ribbon and a good story about a scary lady that kicked in the bathroom door while I was using it. Good times :-) overall pace was 8:21. My garmin said my pace for the last 2.35 miles was an 8:01. Slow start.

flew 2000 miles home. What a wonderful surprise that my daughter had put up all the Christmas decorations and the tree! She did inform me that I'd be the lucky one to put it all away. Lucky me!!
Nice to be home with my family again. I had a nice pillow to rest my head on during the flight home because RAD's little r.a.d. daughter sewed me a pillow to take home with me. She's an amazing girl, and she'll be running circles around me soon.
I also had my new merrell vibram shoes waiting for me at home. I wore them around the house for a while and walked 2 miles around the hood in them. Trying to remember to land on the balls of my feet & not my heels. Trying. |

I tried mid-foot strike running today. It is a very slow process, and I feel ridiculous. All of my miles were over a 10:00 pace, and my heart was racing. I guess it was a good workout, but it just felt futile. I'm going to try a quarter mile in my vibrams tomorrow and see how that goes. Maybe it will be easier in the minimalist shoes than it is in the cushioned ones.

I did 30 minutes on the elliptical, but did it super easy. I wanted to wake up and get the muscles moving, but not over-do it and use up all the energy I will need for the rest of the day.
After work I went out to walk around the track and try a short distance run in the vibrams. I walked .3, then ran .3, then walked 1.4. Total of 2 miles in the shoes but just ran a little bit. |

Happy Saint Andrew's Day!
Felt better after getting some sleep last night. I felt like I had enough energy to either run, or have enough energy to be productive at work all day. Of course I chose running ;-)
I was slow, 10:01 avg pace. I wondered a couple times if I was going to have to stop and hurl, but I'm happy to announce a hurl-free run this morning.
Legs are a little sore from the new shoes yesterday, but not unbearable. The girl I was running/walking with said it looked like I was running on the outsides of my feet. Is this normal with vibrams or am I doing something else wrong??? The outsides of my calves/legs are more sore than the backs.

I just let myself sleep this morning. Feeling not so sick to my stomach, just no energy. I've got a 5k I want to rock on Saturday, so I'm saving my energy to get better....at least that's the excuse MR told me I had. He tucked me back in bed when he left and I told myself, "I'll get up after he leaves." The next thing I knew, it was 6:30 and my alarm radio had been going off for 10 minutes before I even woke up. I'm claiming that I needed the extra sleep!!
Got to work, and the wonderful Donut fairy brought donuts today. I have no strength to resist donuts... so I had a raspberry filled jelly donut. | Race: |
Indian Education Jingle Jog (3.1 Miles) 00:25:19, Place overall: 19, Place in age division: 1 | | Another crazy Fayetteville race where the help on the race course doesn't know where to send runners, so we had at least 4 different races run depending on where you were in the pack. I should have known something was up when I called the race director to ask if they were going by chip time or gun time, and she got really defensive and told me "We will NOT be using a gun." I had to explain that most of the local races don't use a start mat, so all times, even when you're using a chip, are gun times. She didn't even know the answer....I should have known. The race was free entry with 5 canned food donations, so I can't complain too much about the lack of anything. Free was great, and we got a lanyard with a dream catcher and a bell attached. So we really did jingle when we jogged. After an awesome welcome by a local high school marching band, a Lumbee song, presentation of the colors, the national anthem, and speeches by lots of important people, we finally got started. I wanted to race this run, so I got up near the front. I still didn't know if there would be a separate chip time from gun time, so I wasn't taking chances. MR started off with me, and we were doing great keeping ahead of almost everyone. I pulled ahead after .5 miles and just followed the guy in front of me. He was pushing a jogging stroller and was easy to keep an eye on. There were only 4 or 5 other men in front of me by mile 1. I was feeling great, and I knew I was the lead female. I couldn't believe it! I was so happy it was a small race and I had a real chance of getting "recognized." There were police at most intersections (the roads weren't closed off), and some teen-agers helping at a water station I saw just after mile 1. I had half-joking asked the people around me at the starting line, "You DO know where you're going, don't you?" Well, I guess no one did. I knew the route for the first 1/2, but the second half I wasn't familliar with and I was depending on the volunteers to point us in the right direction. I was pretty sure something had gone very wrong when at around mile 1.6 I saw the 2 lead runners running back towards me, and the policeman told them to go down the same street he'd sent jogging stroller man down. I approached him, and he pointed me down that street too. I asked him if that was the right way to go for me since it was only my first time approaching that intersection. He said yes, and sent me after them. I figured they must have changed the route, so I just followed the 2 leaders and stroller man. So by this point, I'm actually #5 and still the first female. I know that I've run 1/2 the distance so I didn't worry when we started going back exactly the way we came. Out and back? Okay...I can do that. I was feeling great and other than my lungs being on fire, things were really good. I just kept my pace up and followed the stroller guy. I think one other guy may have passed me before I finished, so I was #6, but no females ever passed me, or were even close. SOooooooo, imagine my horror when I turn the final corner to the last .2 downhill into the chute, and the road is full of other runners. And there are 2 or 3 women in front of me!! WHAT? Where did they come from? They were coming from the other side of the road...how did they get there? What race were they running??? (there was only one 5k)!! I got mad. Very PO'd mad. All the adrenalin, all the work, all the excitement of knowing I was the lead female, all G-O-N-E. After I crossed the finish line I actually yelled out, "Great! Another one they screwed up!!" This is not the first downtown race that I've run where people on the roads who are "helping" end up sending runners the wrong way. It's just never happened to me before when I was racing. I usually just run the races for fun, and this time it meant more to me. I ended up running 3.25 miles instead of 3.1 miles. MR, who ended up taking 5th overall (and was behind me), had been diverted with every other runner behind me to take a different street back to the finish, and they only ran 2.9 miles to the finish. And that's why the finish road was full of people, and I didn't get my first place female finish. Boo! After talking to others who crossed the finish line, the first few runners that I came back across on the route at mile 1.6 had run out and back almost .5 mile before turning around and meeting up with us. So they ran 3.75 miles. And didn't come in till 6th and 7th place, even though they were in front of me and were smoking the course. Even later in the race, they diverted runners/walkers a different way, and sent them around a round-about a couple of times before sending them back to the start. I don't think they even went 2.5 miles. Oh well. There's not really any way to fix a huge mistake like that.
The girl who was given the first female award was so sweet and came up to me after the race and told me that she knew I was in front of her and offered me her prize $. She was so nice, and I told her that she was very thoughtful, but I couldn't take it from her. She had run fast and strong, and she ran the course they told her to run and come in first. I told her I thought she was a great runner, and she should be proud of her accomplishment. After I talked to her, I felt so much better. I wasn't angry anymore, and I actually felt foolish for being so crazy in the first place. I'm going to blame it on the adrenalin. I don't race often, and I'm not usually competitive, and I think that's how I should keep it. I'm not a good sport when I feel like I get cheated... at least not for 30 minutes until I cool down. So now I have a good story to tell. Hell hath no fury like a runner cheated :-) It was actually lots of fun to be at the race with so many people I know. Lots of co-workers, and even a couple of the students I work with were there at the water stop. I was so proud to see them there helping on a cold Saturday morning. Here's a pix of a few of the GCHS crew with our super- superintendent Dr. Till:
The "bubbles" girls both came. First 5k ever for one of them, and first in too many years for the other. I'm so proud of everyone who came out- it really made it fun to have them there. GO BEARS!

6 miles in the morning on the road to P-town. It was a beautiful morning. Actually too warm for my hat, but I had to leave it on because it was holding my headlamp up.
I started out slow 10:30, and then after mile 1 ran at a comfortable pace. Managed to average a 9:28. It felt good to run and feel healthy. The fire in my lungs has gone away from Saturday's run, and all is well.

I got up early and did Shred level 2 as well as 12 minutes on the elliptical at 75% effort. Showered and got ready, tried to be nice by picking buccaneer #2 up from semiary and took her to the store with me, because I know she likes the books too.
Now let me say something about advertisiting: IF you have a poster sized advertisement at the front of your store for a book's new release, and IF that poster has a particular day listed as when you're going to have the book available, then by 6:50am, you NEED to have that book OUT ON THE SHELF!!!!!
I had to find someone to help me (which is NOT easy at 6:50 am in the morning) and then tell them what I was looking for. They had to radio someone else who looked around the back, and after 10 minutes, they finally found ONE book. REALLY??? What is wrong with this store? (Besides the fact that it's a wal-mart?)
I really wanted to get the book for a co-worker for a holiday gift. I knew she didn't know about the release, and I wanted to surprise her. I am SURE that they were given a shipment of more than one book, but those little dears (bless their hearts) were 100% unable to find any more books. I even gave them some extra time to look for it while I went looking for other things I didn't need (and had to listen to #2 whine at me the whole time).
I even bought the little whiner breakfast since it was taking so long, and in the end, the "helpers" never could find the whole box full of books. So no gift, the surprise is ruined, and I had to listen to the whine factory all morning long. I wish that counted for some kind of workout too.
I can't wait for lunch so I can read!! After work, went to the track and did a .3 warm up, ran 1 mile in the vibrams, then walked 1.8 for a total of 3.1 miles. Calves were a little sore after.

Met my neighbor outside at 4:45 for some speedwork. When we were discussing the time to meet, I suggested 5, and she said that was too late for her. I've never had anyone tell me that!
I thought she'd balk at me if I said 4:30, but I was thrilled when she wanted to go earlier. I was excited and kept waking up during the night, worried that I was going to sleep in and miss our run.
We averaged an 8:46 pace. I really enjoyed the run and the company. I think we're just going to have a standing 4:45 run on Wednesdays. I hate speedwork and it will give me something to look forward to.

After another frustrating trip to wal-mart last night, sore calves from the vibrams, and general lack of self-discipline, I had all sorts of troubles getting myself out of bed this morning.
MR was getting ready and being noisy so I couldn't sleep, so I'm blaming him for me having to get up and run.
My calves don't hurt when I run, but they're sore the rest of the time. Kind of strange if you ask me, but it was nice to run and feel good.
I did a slower recovery run. Avg pace 9:35. I've got plans for a new interval/cardio workout after work, and I'm really excited about it.
Maybe another 5K this Saturday, but it will be hilly and wayyyy more competition. I'll be doing this one for fun! Cardio/strengthening program was fun, less work than I'd figured so it leaves room to ramp up the intensity. 10 minutes warm up (5 walk, 5 jog), 30 second intervals of cardio then 30 seconds of walk/recovery for 10 minutes, 30 second intervals again but with strength activities (push up, plank, bird-dog, burpees) for 20 minutes. We managed 4 sets on the strength intervals, then had a 10 minute cool down.

Ft Bragg Family Fun Run (3.1 Miles) 00:24:00 | | Free races are the best thing ever! This one had no registration, no chips, no bibs- just a start, end, and a clock to keep time. Lots of people with dogs, strollers, or both, lots of kids, some scooters and bikes....just a good time. Being on the base, there was definitely some good competition. I found myself pre-judging every runner I saw trying to figure out if they were going to be super fast or not. It's a little game that I'm not very good at. You just can't judge a runner by what they're wearing or what size they are. It took us a few seconds I'm saying it was around 5 to get to the start. It was downhill for the first half, then right back uphill for the second half. Uphills in the end are tough for me! I wasn't warmed up enough to take full advantage of the great downhill at the start either. I thought it was cold, despite the people wearing t-shirts and shorts! As I was approaching the turn around, I could see the leaders running back. I started looking for women... it took a while to see the first one. She looked like an athlete! I gave her a nod- she was doing great! I counted 8 other females in front of me, and one girl on a scooter who had rolled all the way downhill. I ended up passing 3 of the females on the hill back up, then we had 1 lap on the track to finish the run. There was a lady in front of me that had a 10 miler shirt on who had passed me early in the race, and a girl right behind her. My initial goal was to pass the girl behind her, but she took off like a rocket after 1/4 of the lap... so I worked on overtaking the 10 miler lady. She was running with her husband, who was pushing a stroller. He was on the inside lane, and she was in the 2nd lane. I had to sprint out and around both of them, but I did it just before the last turn and beat her! Not that I had anything against her, I just wanted to get in front of someone, and she was the one. So I think I passed 4 females total, which would have put me at 4 or 5, but I have no way of confirming this. It just doesn't matter. My time was better than any of my other 5K times, so I won the competition with myself, and that's what really pleases me. I was sure that last mile+ that was all uphill was going to put me over an 8mm, but it didn't. I was really happy I could keep my pace fairly constant even with the hill. I have my splits for the first 3 miles, but not the last .1 because even though I pushed my watch, and I swear I heard it beep, it never stopped. Go figure. All splits were in the 7:50s, and I ran faster that last little bit trying to overtake the other lady. Good stuff all together. The clock said 24:04 when I went under it, but I know it was at least 4 or 5 seconds for me to get to the start, so I'm giving myself a 24:00. Good SWAG after: chickfila mini sliders, free coupons, fruit, granola bars, raffles, t-shirts for the first 100 finishers, thumb drives, water bottles & canisters, WWE people to sign & get autographs from (but I don't know who they are and care even less, so I didn't bother), bags, blankets, and lots of little things. We also got free santa hats to run in: And just for Brent, I'll end with the slogan that was printed on our t-shirts: GO ARMY - BEAT NAVY!!

32 minutes on Elliptical, ab ripper x, and then I tried some medicine ball stuff. I did the warm-ups without any problems, but when it was time to actually fling the ball around, I was doomed. 15 lbs is too much for me. I only had time for a few activities, and was I glad I'd run out of time, because I was hurting!!
I'll need to ask Santa for a few lighter weight balls :-)
In the afternoon, I ran laps/bleachers with my co-worker. We ran a lap, then ran a lap doing bleachers on both sides of the field. We just kept going until we got 3 miles done. I was sweating up a storm and it felt good!

Got up early to run with my neighbor, which was awesome. Even better, she was wanting a slow day, and I felt like I'd been beaten up by that silly medicine ball workout, so slow was great! We talked and talked and before I knew it, we were done.
The highlight of my week has been the student that brought his morning "kill" to school strapped to the back of his vehicle. Hunting is for everyone! Enjoy :-)

| | walked with MR around the neighborhood |
| | Christmas break, and stupid chest cold. I worked out on the elliptical for 90 minutes, and went shopping. |
| | Took some daytime theraflu and went running with MR. Beautiful run. So good to be back running. It was dark when we started out, and we got to see the sunrise through the trees as we ran the trails. We also ran across this little dear... I mean deer: It's good to be back!

| | Ran with MR again. Some trails, some roads. One tricky part with tree vines trying to strangle me above & roots trying to trip me below. It was lots of fun- wish I could do it every day. avg pace 9:37.

| | MR & I went on a 30 mile bike ride around the "creek." It was a beautiful day. I had a long sleeve tech shirt on & a fleece jacket over it. I had to take the fleece off after 13 miles I was so hot. We saw a dead puffy kitty in the road. I was worried the cars would hit it as I was riding by and I'd get sprayed with puffy kitty mess, but I didn't. The cars that passed me both straddled that dead cat and avoided hitting me and the cat. Good driving skills, people! Then we went for a walk later in the day for a couple of miles.

| | Went for a run with my neighbor who is recovering from a foot tendon problem on the top of her foot. Came home and got the call from RAD who has a rotten top of her foot problem too. What is up with the top of the feet problems? It was cooler today, just above 40. Nice run and good company. MR rode along on his bike & we got the cows to run with us for a little while. No idea what my splits were- I'd left my watch on bike setting from yesterday. Our time was under an hour, so it's all good in the hood. Excited for Christmas and all the delicious goodies.

| | 4 miles with the neighbor and MR in the morning. Watch was still on bike mode until around mile 2. The last 2.24 miles were at an 8:57 avg pace. Not sure what the first two were, but they were slower than the last 2. I got to try out my new kettle balls. One video was just learning the "moves" and another one was more of a workout. I feel so whimpy when I have to put the 10 lb ball away and grab the 5 because 10 is too heavy to swing. I need to make a goal to get stronger and pull that 15 lb ball out of the cobwebs. 2 hour nap (I love holidays), and then MR and I went and played 18 holes of frisbee golf. I haven't played in 20 years, and I suck, but it was lots of fun and I amused myself with my bad throws for 2 hours. This course is entirely in a forest, so every single hole was just a mess of trees in front of the goal. I'm pretty good at hitting the trees :-)

| | Rain in the morning. I did the p90x legs & back, and finally used the pull-up bar. I HAD to use the chair to help get myself up, and I'm fairly certain that I won't be able to move my arms at all in 2 days, but it was a good work-out. I did the ab ripper after and it put a hurtin' on me. I haven't done it for a few weeks and all my stomach muscles have turned into flesh colored pumpkin pie. Good times. I worked on my summer vacation photo album book for a couple hours & watched Sense & Sensibility, then I took my merrells out for a quick short run because the sun came out :-)

| | Wore my new white shoes on the trails today with MR, so they're not new looking anymore. Red dirt galore :-) We did lots of hills today, which were hard for me, but dang it feels good to be a hill-ster. Avg pace was 9:29. I'm sore from my kettle-balls and p90x, but I find it's easier to move after I get going. Sitting just makes it hurt more.

| | 95 minutes on elliptical reading my books (which makes time fly). legs are really sore from p90x legs & back (arms are sore too- I'm not sure how much of my back I actually use in that video). After elliptical, I tried doing the ab ripper and it made me yelp out in pain. I hadn't done it for a few weeks, and my abs were sore, sore, sore. It hurt like a mother trying to do the exercises. But I managed to finish the whole video AND I was making enough horrid noise that buccaneer #1 had to shut the door on me. Win for the mamma pirate!! After all that, I took a quick jog in the merrells. I made it all the way around the loop! My calves haven't bothered me at all from running in them the short distances I've been running. I may try and up the distance next week. Maybe.

| | Went on a run with DAR (neighbor next door). MR & her hubby rode bikes while we ran. It was a tough run for me because my legs felt tired from everything all week. I had that feeling like I was a 3 toed sloth trying to escape the latin american chupacabra...I was just loping along. We kept our AP under 9:30 and finished, so it was all good. Went on a 4 mile walk with Wyatt later on in the day- she's been wicked sick the last month, one round of antibiotics after another. Hope she'll be back & ready to run again soon.

| | PF is bothering my heel a little. Probably from too much time in the merrells and not enough time in my arch support shoes. :-( So we went for a bike ride. MR and I rode out into the wind, and the wind blew like a hurricane (or it felt like it). Our first 12 miles took us over an hour. And we were really pedaling fast for one of them trying to lose a puppy that insisted on chasing us for the whole mile. I was impressed at his speed and how long he kept running with us. He was just having a good time out there running after & along us, but I was nervous because he'd try crossing the street in front of me and I knew we'd both lose that situation. Happy New Year to everyone!
