Top 5 excuses for not running this morning:

1-legs very sore from the shred workout (I assume that's why, it's the only variable)

2- had to drive to seminary (I would have had to get up at 4 am to do my run)

3-wind chill in the low teens at 4 am

4-groin still a little sore

5-I didn't want to be the "perfectionist" I'd read about in the runner's world mag yesterday :0)

I did the shred again yesterday after work.  I thought it was getting easier, so I'm not sure why my legs are so sore.  I think I've been doing more of the "challenging" versions of the exercises and moving up from the "easier" side.  Mabye that's it.  I don't know.

Is it a good idea to do a 7 mile interval run (3x1600 at an 830 pace) when my legs are sore like this?  If it's good to do, then I'll run after work.  If it's better to rest, I'll do it tomorrow.  What does the jury think?

UPDATE:  Headed out just before 5 pm.  Weater was much nicer in the afternoon than the morning.  Started out comfortable.  Ran 3 miles at a slower pace.  Then tried a mile at the 8:30 tempo.  I overshot the time and ran too fast, but I was thrilled that nothing hurt.  In fact, the running seemed to help the sore muscles.  I did a 800 recovery then 2 miles at the 8:30 tempo.  I worked at keeping it as close as I could to 8:30.  I think I ended up running 8:45 half the time and 8:15 the other half, but it all worked out in the wash.  I had a 800 recovery at the end.  I ran the last .2 miles home because it had gotten dark and it was time to pick up the little pirate from school.

Paces were: 9:55, 9:22, 9:16, 7:59, 10:31 (.5 recovery, water:, took off one jacket layer), 8:37, 8:27, 9:28 (.5 cool down), 9:55 (.2 finish to home).

I think I had a mental block that an 8:30 would be too hard for me.  It had been a long time (3 weeks) since I'd run speed like that and I was happy to see that I could do it.

So this "perfectionist" you read about in RW, was that in the article about the woman who switched to a treadmill because she thought she was crazy to be out running intervals on the track in the dark wee hours of the morning?

As for whether to run this afternoon, I suggest you run a couple of miles easy to warm up, then if you're feeling good, do the intervals. If you're not feeling good, either run a few more miles easy, or stop.

No, it was a different article on runners who are too hard on themselves and don't take a break when they need to. there was a survey to take to see if you were a super-perfectionist- I wasn't. But I thought of the article this morning as I was searching my mind for validation to stay in bed.

So it's just another excuse.

I think Carolyn had good advice. When I am tired I like to take my music and just run slow. It usually invigorates me to run but not push it too hard. Good work on the shred video, at least you know your muscles are getting stronger!

From The Quiet Pirate on Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 13:18:41 from 24.199.205.252

Carolyn & Michelle, Thanks for the advice. I think I'll just head out and do a slow warm up. Later, if speed feels okay, I'll go with it. If it hurts, I'll just keep going slow. I know running slow and easy will be okay at this point in the game.

Better to get a few more miles in, even if they are slow and easy. I'll just get to enjoy them more this way.

I know all the shred soreness is a good thing. I'm a little disappointed that I keep finding new places that aren't very "fit" on my body. I'm already feeling a stronger core when I run, so I'm happy with where it's taking me.

Thanks again for the advice & encouragement. QP

I'm with the jury. When I read Carolyn's response I was shaking my head in agreement. Pushing too hard when you are sore or tired can lead to injury and where your groin is apt to injury anyway, I'd make sure and listen to your body. Speaking of RW, there was an article about that too :)

I think changing what our bodies are used to will always give us that soreness, not matter how 'fit' we are :( Just like when you go skiing or jetskiing and can't walk the next day! It's worse than running a marathon :)

RAD- you're right about the jet-ski thing. If only shredding was as fun. At least I don't have to shave my legs to do the shred video :-)

I didn't finish the Jan mag yet. I left it at home on the counter because I'm making the ham and bean soup for dinner. Everything's ready to go in the pot when I get home. I'll let mini-me watch the pot while I run.

For the jello cake, use a bundt pan...THAT would be fun. They probably have some Christmas tree ones on clearance at Wal-mart :)

I always read the mag front to back, only way to remember what I read and what I didn't. Wish anything sounded good to me right now...
