Okay y'all...I've been away at the US National Whitewater Center for the last couple of days.  It was marvelous fun!

If you're ever near Charlotte, or just need an excuse to visit Charlotte, then you must go :-)

We went whitewater rafting (six one-hour long trips on the water), kayaked on the Catawba River, rock climbed, zip-lined, mountain biked, mega-jumped (40 foot drop), and confidence coursed on the high-wire.  I didn't run at all, except for the sprint I did from the confidence course to the rafting place so we didn't miss our trip time.  We got caught behind a cute little lady that was terrified of heights and took 30 minutes to finish a 10 minute course.  It was probably 1/3 of a mile, but I was booking it down the mountain side to get there on time.  I was a bit terrified of the mountain biking trails.  They were steeper and had a lot more trees than I'd imagined.  But after I got over my initial fears, I really, really, loved it.  WAY more fun than riding on the roads!!!  Took me back to my days in spinning class.

I am sore in so many places, but it feels rewarding, and was really worth it.  I'd love to go back sometime and take my kids.  But this was a nice get away for just the MR and me.

It'll be back to running for me on Monday.   Until then,  here's a couple of pix from the adventure.

QP, great pictures, sounds like a blast, it is easy to get hooked on Mountain biking, hey, that all counts for some cross training miles.

Stay Kool, B of BS Rools out

By the way, very nice note from you, thanks

Holy Moly girl!! When you told me you were going there I had NO idea what it all encompassed! I think I now know where my next vacation without kids will be!! Both Craig and I would have a BLAST there, I'm honestly really jealous - except all the 'learning the hard way' you had to go through :)

I'm with Brent on the cross training miles, it was probably worth a good 20+ on the road!!

Here's the website http://www.usnwc.org/

It was so fun and affordable. The $49 fee paid for everything we did. The "extreme" sports like whitewater kayaking are extra because you get an hour or more of instruction.

It wasn't crowded either. It's like disneyland for grown-ups!

What a wonderful adventure!

So from the picture it looks like a man-made river for whitewater rafting. It never occurred to me that someone would build such a thing. I guess that's because I grew up in Utah and live in Colorado now.

Carolyn, you're right- it is man made. They've got 6 huge pumps that run continually and a escalator type ramp that moves rafts from the pool of water on the bottom up to the top. Then you can take one of two sides: the class 2/3 side, or the class 4 side. A 60 minute raft trip will usually give you 5 runs.

There is probably some good "real" river rafting over in appalachia or the smoky mountains, but that's another 3 hours west.

This is the facility where the olympic kayakers train. We actually saw one of them while we were on a rafting trip. It was amazing to see how fast he went and still seemed to be in control.

have you ever been to the ocoee where they hosted the whitewater portions of the atlanta olympics? i've been there a few times. spectacular rafting! a group of us was supposed to go camping/rafting/hiking/mtn biking up there last summer, but that fell through. :( i haven't thought about that in a while. makes me want to go again!
