Did elliptical this morning.  30 min of one course and 20 min of another.  Did the seminary thing, and then I worked on my stretching and physical therapy.

Planning on meeting up after school and doing some kind of workout.  I'll be taking it easy, and hopefully getting more yoga stretches in.

pm workout- walked the track once to warm up, then did some very slow bleachers.  10 sets is a mile.  Things felt good.  I did rub a little icy hot on the back of my leg, but I think it would have been okay w/o it.  Stretched with the varsity football team as my witnesses, and now I'm home and going to take a bath because we're having leftovers for dinner!

How's your leg/knee feeling from yesterday?

I skipped the seminary thing this morning and made the kid walk. It's less than a mile away.

From The Quiet Pirate on Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 11:29:42 from 24.199.205.252

Carolyn,

My "crampy" leg feels 99% better. I didn't feel a thing wrong on the elliptical. Thanks for asking.

I'm using positive thinking, and I feel like Saturday will be fine for my long run. I'm just not going to focus on pulling my heels up as much. I might even put some moleskin on my ankles.

I think changing my form will come if I slowly work on it, but I don't think it's going to happen overnight, and I'd rather focus on keeping my other troubles at bay rather than creating new ones.

It's nice you're close to seminary. Give that kid a headlamp, and let him run!

I haven't measured, but I know ours is over 4 miles away. I've got seminary proximity envy :-)

Is anyone else having trouble getting the blog pages to come up today?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 12:00:10 from 198.241.156.7

I decided to change my stride a while ago and tried to focus on a mid-foot strike and more of a heel lift. I made a sudden change to that form without reducing my mileage. I ended up pulling a muscle in my calf. I was able to get over it with rest and Active Release Technique therapy, but the lesson I learned is that when you want to make a change like that, you should take it slowly.

At the risk of worsening your seminary proximity envy, I'll mention that we actually have seminary at the high school, so once the kids are there in the morning, that's it.

It was light when my son was walking to seminary this morning, but just barely. I'm going to need to get him some kind of light soon because I need him to keep walking a couple of days per week.

I'm glad the leg is better, and I'd agree with both of you...change is better slowly. My quad is also proof of that!

I haven't had any trouble today, but I'm also on now a few hours after you. Maybe it was too much high traffic...no idea. Are you still having trouble?

From The Quiet Pirate on Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 17:04:03 from 65.191.134.20

RAD- I'm not having troubles here at home. I guess it was something with the "other" connection.

Carolyn, it sounds like form changing really should be a gradual, slow process. Not something to conquer on a long run, or a 7 mile tempo run. Lesson learned....this time anyway.

I'm sure this sounds ignorant, but what is Active Release Therapy? Should I just google it?

I didn't realize Colorado had in-school seminary. I know some places in Alaska have it too. Just not down here in the bible-belt ;-)

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 17:18:52 from 198.241.174.15

It's not release-time seminary. It's still early-morning. They just do it in the school building. Some other churches use school buildings for their Sunday meetings.

Go to http://www.activerelease.com/.

Active Release Technique kind of like deep tissue massage. I have it done by a chiropractor who is certified in it.

Seminary :p My kids are lucky that their seminary is at school. I'd be a bad seminary driver mom :(

Why do you have to bathe when you have leftovers ;) (I am just giggling over here ;) We are having burritos with home made pinto beans and the yummy cook-'em yourself tortillas from costco :) I don't have to wash my hair because I am cooking dinner from scratch :)

Great workout!

lol! Marion you crack me up! I guess I need to school you in the family cooking routine :) hehehehe

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 17:59:49 from 198.241.174.15

Marion, when you say your kids have seminary at school, I assume you're talking about release-time seminary. I have to say I think there's something to be said for the sacrifice required of the kids to go to early-morning seminary. Just putting a positive spin on living outside of Utah.

From marion on Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 18:05:50 from 71.213.124.121

Truth be told it urks the TAR out of me that they have to take a class period out for seminary. I am sure I will be in trouble for that attitude, but it does. I see no reason we can't just have early morning seminary everywhere. it's not like there are more teens in wards here in Utah, Idaho or AZ. Ooops, I am spouting off and I should be a good girl and keep flaunting and bragging about release time seminary :)

From RAD on Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 18:16:48 from 76.27.12.70

I'm with Carolyn. I know too many kids in HS that abused release-time seminary. It takes a lot more dedication and devotion to hit early morning seminary! I don't mind it in HS, but I think we've got it WAY easier. Kind of like everything else - hence most people's feelings about "Utah Mormons"!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 18:43:49 from 198.241.174.15

Marion, when I went to HS in Utah, we had release-time seminary but also had an option of early morning. Maybe times have changed or maybe it depends on the school.

From The Quiet Pirate on Fri, Sep 11, 2009 at 09:47:14 from 24.199.205.252

As a student, I was happy to have release time seminary. I saw it more as "release time" and less than seminary time.

As a parent, I am grateful for the opportunity that early morning seminary gives my son. I think it will help him when he has to get up early as a missionary.

I just don't like the fact that my morning run/exercise time is cut so short when I have to drive him to church at 5:30 in the morning. It's a totally selfish thing. I'm hoping that he'll get his license and be able to drive himself next year.

I think the self motivation that kids need to get to early morning seminary is the same kind of attribute that we all have when we get out there and pound the pavement. Running can be a religious experience too ;-)

Marion,

Your comment made me laugh! I'm sure I sounded stupid with my "I can take a bath because we're having left overs!" It made perfect sense when I wrote it.

My muscles were sooo tired when I got home. I wanted to sleep. I thought a warm bath sounded good, and I was glad we were just re-heating leftover food for dinner because that meant I would have time for the bath.

It's really one of my favorite meals to prepare. I call it "Pick a Can." It means people can eat whatever is left over in the fridge, or they can pick a can of something out of the pantry and heat it up. Either way, I'm not involved in any of the work. So I can take a bath...and finish reading Runner's World!

From marion on Fri, Sep 11, 2009 at 10:05:38 from 71.213.124.121

OH my goodness, you didn't sound stupid at all :) Blogging makes it really easy to say "funny" stuff :) I figured that is what you meant, it just sounded so funny. I suppose that I should get a nap in so my humor gets back into the "normal" realm ;)

OH- I love "pick-a-can" Can I steal that name from you??? My husband gets so sad at leftover night. the poor guy :( He almost cried when I told him to eat the leftover lasagna for lunch yesterday... and he LOVED lasagna. go figure. Maybe he'll like it more now that I get to take a bath whenever he has to eat leftovers ;D

From The Quiet Pirate on Fri, Sep 11, 2009 at 10:35:54 from 24.199.205.252

Pick-a-can is all yours. It's the least I can do for the great recipes you've given me. Thanks for your humor.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Fri, Sep 11, 2009 at 11:48:18 from 24.8.167.243

That sounds like my kind of dinner! And a warm bath sounds awesome as well.
