4:30...no rain....somewhat humid....not warm, but not cool either

I didn't know what my goal was today, but I knew I had to be done by 5:30.  So I just started out slow, then picked up the pace a little, then I tried some of those strides I'm so curious about.

Reading about something and actually applying it correctly isn't always easy.  I'm probably going to need someone who knows what they're doing to watch me and help me out on this.

I'm not sure I understand the difference between fartlek and stride, except strides are faster and shorter distances.  Is this right?

Either way, I got in 6 "strides" over the last 2 miles.  Avg pace overall was 9:09.   Is it okay to do the strides when I'm running a faster pace, or should I only do them when I'm running recovery pace?  I tried doing them with a faster pace than recovery in between.  It was a good tough effort.

usually when i do striders, i finish the bulk of my run (i.e., if i'm planning on running 8 miles for the day, i finish all 8 miles), then as kind of an addendum to the run, i do the striders, usually 5 to 10 of them, usually around 50 or 75meters apiece.

doing the striders along with a faster workout is fine, since the point of the striders isn't really to wear you out or build up any more fatigue; rather, they are to help you stretch out (e.g., the "exaggerated" or "slow motion sprinting" type form) whilst also giving you a bit of experience with the quick leg turnover needed toward the end of a race. (i used to do them all the time at the ends of pretty rough speed workouts, and they felt pretty good)

just my $0.02 (probably only worth a penny now with inflation...)

Nevels had better advice than I would. I don't really know what I'm doing. I just make it up as I go along.

Good job getting out early early this morning. Being done by 5:30 is tough.

QP - ring that core bell - 100 commando points for not falling asleep while running. Striders - very important for getting the feeling of running fast and easy, if that makes sense. Also, good to have that ability in your bag of tricks for the end or races, can help you get the monkey off your back for a good finish.

I've always done simple yasso 800's which we'd do a couple miles warm-up and then 800's at top speed and then recover the 400. I'm not even sure these are the same as 'strides' They do talk about them in RW this month though - just read the article this morning (it's toward the front/middle). From what I read I'd give a nod to Nevels!

Nice work getting it all in before the break of dawn!! *yawn*
