Let's start today with a photo of what I wore today.  Sometimes the shirt/bottoms vary, but the light, jacket/vest, and leg bands are always the same.

Photo in the light:

Since it's always dark in the morning when I go running, this is what I'd look like if you approached me with a low powered flash light:

So I am totally clueless as to how a person driving a F150 pickup truck with both headlights on and no other lights (or approaching cars) in the area FAILS to see me running on the 3.5 inches of shoulder on the road.

That being said, I realize I am terribly blessed/lucky that it was only her side view mirror that hit my ribcage and not the whole front end of the truck.  My ribcage is bruised, and where the ribs attach at the sternum and vertebra I am sore, but nothing is broken.

EMS asked, "Could you be any MORE reflective?"  and that was before she saw the leg reflectors.  I really don't know what else I can do to keep myself safe and seen.  Maybe a flashing blue light like a police car?  (Who by the way, after 35 minutes, never even showed up to the scene of the accident.... 3 fire trucks, ems, and no law enforcement).

Suggestions are welcome as long as they don't include telling me not to run in the dark.  And whatever you do, don't tell my Mother!

I'm just bummed I didn't get to finish my run.  It's taper week anyway.... I'm cleared to run the 1/2 on Saturday and I'll be a monkey's pirate if I'm going to let dumb people keep my afraid and in my house.

Wow, that sucks about getting hit! Geez. I'm glad to hear that you are ok and not injured or worse.

My main suggestion is to run into traffic, not against it, so that you can see the vehicles approaching you and get out of the way if anyone is getting too close.

Also, run on the sidewalk whenever possible. I see many runners running on the roadside, instead of the sidewalk, and I've never really understood it. The asphalt is a little more forgiving than the cement but with the uber-cushioned shoes available to runners these days I don't think it makes any difference one way or the other. Plus the cement is generally flat and the asphalt is slanted.

Glad that you're ok!

Thanks Ken. I do run into traffic, but live in the country and sidewalks don't exist. Off the road is grassy, uneven rocks, and holes in dirt, and I've twisted my ankle and torqued my knee running in it in the dark when I can't see... I really have to depend on people seeing me and giving me a little egress.

I agree that asphalt and cement really don't make much of a difference in the shoes we wear, and when I can, I'll stay on sidewalks.

Yeah that definitely does make it difficult then. I still can't believe that someone hit you and didn't stop to see if you were ok!

From The Quiet Pirate on Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 19:03:04 from 71.49.55.78

Ken- the lady did stop after she hit me. Turned out to be someone I know through a friend. Made it difficult for me to be angry knowing she is such a good lady.

Just goes to show you that even nice people need to pay attention when they're driving.

It seems as though I make a lot of assumptions, sorry about that =( I'm going to think about my conversing so I can hopefully avoid making so many assumptions when I comment on peoples blogs.

I am glad that you were not seriously hurt! And I hope that you can find a solution to your running dilemma.

From The Quiet Pirate on Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 20:32:24 from 71.49.55.78

It's all good. Nice to hear from other bloggers and runners who know quitting isn't an option.

You know how I feel about this...and who I want to kick in the teeth...and that I won't tell your mother :)

I am just amazed! One, that she didn't see you! Two, that you aren't more injured. Three, that the mirror fell off and you didn't break anything! Honorary Ironwoman :)

We can't control all the idiots in the world, we can only control ourselves. I know you are super safe and diligent when running, and maybe that is what scares me. I've had a few close brush bys, but nothing remotely close to this! Shook me up a bit. I'm glad you are recovering well today.

I'm glad you don't have to give up your half on Saturday. Just take it easy...and take percoset beforehand :)

From Brent on Wed, Nov 14, 2012 at 16:24:06 from 168.178.30.246

QP, were you running against or with traffic? Always run against, at least you have a chance to jump out of the way. Is the lady going to pay your doctor bill and bring you meals for the next few days? Glad you will be ok, some people are just dumb asses that cannot give anyone a foot on the road.

Be safe pirate, B of BS Rools out

From The Quiet Pirate on Wed, Nov 14, 2012 at 17:15:14 from 71.49.55.78

Brent- I always run on the left side of the road into traffic. My headlamp is aimed at the windshield of oncoming cars to catch their attention. I was on the edge of the asphalt. I am not sure other driver had her eyes open. No medical bills to pay, but she did call to say she had been praying for me. What can I say?

From Terri on Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 11:53:03 from 68.49.115.160

Oh my Gosh!! Unbelievable! Is she blind? You must have been scared / angry / stunned.

From Chad on Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 19:52:41 from 204.113.19.55

Wow, that is scary news. Maybe your reflectiveness blinded her? Ok, that joke is probably in poor taste.

From The Quiet Pirate on Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 20:14:51 from 71.49.55.78

Terri- perhaps she is, yes, yes, and yes. You know we'll have lots to discuss Saturday!

Chad- are you kidding? It's funny! The comment that is, not being hit. I started joking about it yesterday, so it's fair game now.

From bye-wing on Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 21:51:07 from 124.122.45.35

That is SO SCARY!! And I'm glad you were ok. I just hate to hear things like this...Again I am so glad you are ok. Hope the soreness from your ribs doesn't get too bad and you can still do your 1/2 this weekend.

And just to let you know, I think mom needed to know about this so I told her. Just kidding :)

Oh, can how can I forget to mention that I loved your little photo fashion demo :) Next time would you mind modeling the clothes for us???

Be careful out there .

I am so sorry to hear you got hit by some lame and absent minded driver! How are you feeling now? Were you able to run your half? Hope you are healing and no more pain!

From Burt on Thu, Nov 22, 2012 at 12:38:25 from 70.34.6.51

This is the greatest post of all time.

And Ken's assumptions made it all the more entertaining :)

From The Quiet Pirate on Thu, Nov 22, 2012 at 12:42:58 from 71.49.55.78

Burt- at least Ken didn't threaten to tell my mother!
