40 minutes of extra sleep was on the menu this morning.  It's my "easy" week so I took one morning break- even though my long run tomorrow is only 8 miles.

Shredded it up with Jillian & her 2 lovely fem-bots.  Then I went on the mini-run.  5:35am- avg pace was around 8:50.

Ran with Wyatt.  faster pace for our saturday avg..9:14 overall. weather is getting better every week!

Labor day sleep in and run....wonderful to run in the sunshine on a week-day again.  Especially with the cooler weather.  It felt really nice today.  Ran to p-town; not much excitement- just a smashed opossum and something that looked like a ribcage belonging to a medium sized dog.

warm up, run 7, cool down. avg pace 9:02

splits: 9:28, 8:58, 8:58, 9:00, 9:00, 8:51, 8:43, 8:48, 9:37

in the afternoon, went for a bike ride.  70 minutes, then a break to shoot the bull with Wyatt for a while, then another 30 minutes home.  Lost my pepper spray somewhere in the first 1/2, and really needed it during the 2nd.  Dogs barking and chasing me right at my feet as I'm trying to pedal away from them and not into traffic...it's enough to make me really mad.  I want to scream at the owners who let their dogs do that.  But I doubt it would do any good.  So I went and bought 2 pepper sprays after dinner.  So now I've got a back up.

Now my troubles are going to have trouble with me.

progressive run- wasn't in the mood this morning and took a while to run off the grump.  Finally got in my groove.  Enjoyed watchin the sky lighten as I ran east/north-east the last 3 miles of my run just around 6 am.  It was beautiful.  A nice reward for dragging myself out.

Had to spray a little yapper this morning.  Then some of the spray was on my finger and I used it to wipe the sweat off under my nose...that was a burn I wasn't prepared for.

Saw someone out on their bike in the dark.  Little headlight on the bike...giving me ideas.  Maybe I can BRUSH sometime.... maybe

pockets of hot and cold air as I ran.  Different temps coming off the fields and swamps..it was strange.  At one minute I was in a hot foggy mess of air, and the next, it was clear and a cool breeze, the back & forth between the two.

Avg pace 9:17.  Progressive..started at around a 10:30 and ended around 8:30.

Ran with Wyatt.  Around mile 2 I didn't feel well and wondered how it was all going to happen, but then by mile 4 I felt great.  I glad improvements happened.

Ran with Wyatt.  tri-county loop with an extra mile at the end around her house to total 18.    She calls that the Mount Surrey Chi-hua-hua run because there are wwwaaayyy too many people that have those little dogs over the course of that 1 mile.  But at least there's only one house that has a life sized bleeding heart Jesus statue in the front yard.  Too many of those and people might get ideas.

We took water breaks at miles 7 and 15.  Then a tree-line break intbetween those.  No porta potties out on this run.  There was an awesome woman who stuck her head out her front door as we ran by and cheered us on yelling "great job ladies, looking good!  Keep up the good work."  It was like we were really in a race.  I'll never forget her- she made my day.  Lots better than the lady who yelled at us 2 weeks ago and called us names :-)

overall avg pace was 9:58.  started slow, but for most of the miles we were just about 9:58. the pace was getting slower from miles 12-15, but we picked it up at the end and managed negative splits by finishing our last 3 miles around 9:30's.

I don't normally do ice baths, but thought I'd try it today.  I fell asleep in the ice bath.  I think maybe I was a little tired, so I crawled into bed and slept for 2 hours.  It was great.  I was happy that I had the time to let myself sleep today too.  Some Saturdays are too busy for sleeping all day.  Not much else got done today, but I don't think the world will come to an end if I miss a day of Saturday chores.

4:33 am.  low 60's.  very nice weather!  Beautiful clear sky with lots of stars.  Only ran into one guard-cat who had his eyes glowing back at me from the headlamp.  Other than that, pretty uneventful.

all but one mile was progression, so we'll call it that.  Overall avg pace 9:14.  Can't complain.  Saving my complaining for next Monday when I have 11 miles so I'll have to head out at 4:10...aarrrgggghhh.

ahhh...speed work.

7 miles with 3x1600 @ fast pace & recovery inbetween.  4:50 am.

warm up mile 1-9:26 (faster than my normal warm up,  but I wanted a good base speed to start from

2- 7:52, 3-8:56, 4- 7:56, 5- 9:15, then stink of all stinky, .14 miles into my mile 6 speed work, I got that dumb-bunny cramp behind my knee where my knee brace is.  I couldn't run  or even walk. I took off the knee brace, then stopped & stretched in someone's driveway, then started back walking, then easy jog, then just ran the next mile at an easy progression.  So the .14 was an 8:08 pace, then the next mile was 9:11.  I did a speed mile after that to get my 3 speed sessions in.  It was a 7:39.  Then a cool down jog of 10:23 for .11 miles to get to the driveway.

I was able to run the last 2 miles w/o the knee brace on & w/o any problems. Maybe I need to leave it at home on speed sessions.  I don't know.  The physical therapist said I'd always need it, but what's the point if it's causing problems?  I wear the knee band/brace for "runner's knee."

Total overall pace was 8:38.  I felt good running the whole time except for the leg cramp.

Ended up having "one of those  days" at work.  I was like Odessyus on my Epic journey.  Got yelled at by the giant, stabbed in the back by Cyclops, & farted on by a troll.   I can't wait for the week-end to get here!

Slept really well (sorry RAD).  Run was nice- kind of just put it on auto-pilot and got it done.

At one point I ended up running in a thick fog,  and the next thing I knew, there was a big white van 3 feet away from me parked on the side of the road (no houses around).  It really scared me- took me by surprise.  I was relieved when I finally got past the van & out of the fog.

7+ mile bike ride after work.  rode west as the sun was beginning to go down and the sky was changing.  It was beautiful.  I thought how it was so much like the beginnings of the sunrises I get to see in the mornings.

funny little leg pain in my thigh jumped up & bit me when I tried running up stairs.  going to take Friday off and go easy on Sat instead of testing my luck with a 20 miler as planned.  I can do do 20 miles next week when the little pain is long gone.

Trying the foam roller....strange device.

no pain in my quad this morning.  good news :-)

wyatt is sick with sinus infections & couldn't run. bad news:-(

so I got another hour of sleep :-) and ran alone :-(

I have a long run next Saturday and don't want to over-do it with my quad, so I just went at an easy pace and kept the miles lower than the suggested training guide, which has me doing low miles next week & big miles this week.

avg pace 9:25.  splits: (it's like a rollercoaster...) 9:47, 9:32, 9:27, 9:26, 9:42, 9:32, 9:53, 9:16, 9:16, 8:58, 8:50.  walked for 1.3 miles after, and used the roller again.

i didn't have the leg pain, but after using the roller, it seemed like I had achey muscles a little.  Is this normal as I get used to the roller, or just a coincidence?

Almost ran on top of a cotton mouth snake.  I don't know how, but I didn't see it till I almost stepped on it.  It's head was right on the white line I was running on.  Luckily, it's head was smashed it (fairly recently), but it was hard to tell at first glance.  I'm glad I slept in.  An hour earlier, and that snake might not have been dead yet.

This is why I HATE having to run in the grass on the side of the road.  Sometimes with cars coming in both directions, I just have to do it, but when there's only one car on the road and it's coming toward me, WHY can't they give me a little space so I don't have to go in the grass?

Actually, most people do.  It's just a few who don't move an inch.  And of those few, 89% of them are women.  Why is that???  Hhhmmmmmmm....

Holy moly people- 3:45 is too early to wake up and run.  I managed to get ready and warmed up by 4:15 (5 min later than planned).  I move so slowly in the morning.

Ran my 11 miles.  Paces were all over the place.  I need to start getting in a groove and finding my marathon pace so I can practice that pace on these silly morning runs.  Avg was 9:19.

The only good thing was, there were less cars than usual on the roads.  on the spokes I ran off the busy road, I only saw one car that wasn't out delivering newspapers.  The busy road was just about the same as usual.

No big vans or snakes today.  It's a good thing- I don't think I would have been able to handle much more than just running.

Bonus:  I got to see the moon set just as I started out.  It was an awesome huge orange ball setting into the tree tops.  I'm glad I got to see it, even if it was only for 10 minutes.

Dragging most of the day after the run.  Not so much sleepy, but my body feels tired.  And it's Monday, so I'm going to blame it on that.

Hope all the FRB Herriman folks made it safely out of harm's way.  Prayers for those who weren't so lucky.

SHRUB day!

SHred- level 1

RUn- 3 miles. 10mm pace

Bike- home from work- 7 miles.

I realized I'd left my helmut at home when I was driving to work. So instead of saving gas & not having to drive home twice, I had to drive home anyway to get the helmut. Then I drove back to the school, and rode the bike home so the kids could drive home when they were done.

They got home just about the same time I did, but I had a much better ride home than they did. I just know it! I won't forget sunglasses next time either. Riding south-west in the evenings is rough on the eyes.

tried getting out early, but something came up- so I started 10 min late (4:40).  I made up most of the time, and only got home 3 min late.  Not too shabby.  Of course after stretching and rolling around on that silly foam roller, my morning was gone, no time for breakfast or a nap.  Althought I do believe somewhere in the midst of praying, I may have dozed off for a minute or two.  I'm hoping He understands.

Ran a route that connects my two spokes, so it was a loop.  Only 1/2 mile of out & back near my house.  Hated trying to find a pace.during the first few miles.  I used my Garmin to help me out.  I was cursing it the first 45 minutes, but in the end was glad I used it.  I need to focus on finding my race pace and practicing it.  I think today was a little faster than I'm going to shoot for, but at least it was fairly consistent (just under 9mm).

One scary part of the run... on the connector section.  There is a swamp, and the road runs next to it/through it.  No lights at all, lots of trees (so no moonlight), and my wild imagination.  I ran right in the middle of the road so no alligators or snakes would come out of the swamp at me.  It's only .25 miles long, but it seemed to go on forever.  Car lights would have been good, but then I would have been too close to the swamp.  In the daylight, this is one of my favorite places to run past because of the beautiful lilly pads among the cypress trees.  Night time is a whole different creature.

The moon was lovely.  It was setting just as I was finishing up.  I was glad I'd been out and had the chance to see it floating among the clouds.  Most of the world missed the beauty.  Lucky lady pirate today- moon treasures and no alligators.

After work 7.7 miles on the bike.  nice ride- so refreshing.

The plan said 10, but I'm doing my long run this weekend instead of last, so I thought maybe it was okay to do less.   I was thinking 6, but then thought, well, I am training, so I'll do 8.  But I underestimated my distances and ended up with 9.

Beautiful, bright moon lighting my path and keeping me company.  Not too many cars, and no alligators or snakes.  Nice run.  Went slower than yesterday, because yesterday was a pace run and today wasn't.

avg pace 9:21.

Biking today after work, tomorrow I do believe I will sleep in and take 'er easy.

This was actually a 24 hour ultra.  I could only stay for 12.  Next year, I hope I get to stay and play with the big kids all night long.

I ran 20 for my marathon training plan, another 6.2 to make it a marathon, and then another 4 just to say I'd run 30.  I took some walking breaks after that.  Kept track of my miles & those paces on the garmin.  So I know my total running was 40.26.  The other 11.32 miles were the ones I walked.

After the 30 and a quick break to refuel and use the bathroom, I walked a couple of miles & then tried running.  It was hard!!  I didn't realize it was possible to run 13 minute miles.  But I certainly managed. A new PR for me :-)  Took a couple more breaks & had to walk to the car/bathroom a couple times too.  Those miles aren't included- and I had to park up the hill.

Fun things about the run:

  •  Every 1.57 miles, you're back at the snack/refreshment/re-fuel table.  It's easier when you know there's a break ahead.
  • there was a blind runner with his guide there kicking up the dirt for a long, long time.  So impressive.
  • All ages, all sizes.  Even one pregnant lady (she ran a couple hours).
  • MR wasn't able to come, but really wanted to be there.  So I brought a cut out of his face (life size) and put it on a paint stirrer stick.  I clipped it to my lawn chair so he got to watch all the runners go by through the day.  I even took him on a victory loop around mile 34.  Someone said, "you brought your pacer with you!"
  • The great snacks they had for us.  lots to drink from ginger-ale & coke to gatorade.  Then there were chips, m&m's, gummy bears, BK double cheeseburgers (which are great fuel after 30 miles, by the way), pizza, and (drum roll please).... ice cream cake!!!
  • The route.  It was a trail loop that went around a lilly-pad filled lake.  Lots of trees, which was good since it was in the 90's, mostly packed dirt, but enough sand to make you appreciate when it wasn't sandy.  A few hills, but not too many.  And when you'd run past the starting point, you'd call out your # to the volunteers who would put a tally mark next to your number.  I believe the race coordinator said they were doing it "old school."
  • This is the largest 24 hour ultra in the US.  So anyone who wants to come next year, I'll be happy to be your host!
  • Watching the sunrise over the water in the east, and then watching it set over the water in the west.  How lucky can one girl be?

I'll tell you, lucky enough that I made it 12 hours, got to run & walk for 50 miles, and found a KFC on the way home to treat myself to some extra crispy fried chicken.  Because if I've ever deserved some fried chicken, it was then.

Pix of MR & I on our loop together:

splits for running.  (ran till 30.26 then ran a mile, walked a while after that).

miles 1-10: 10:11, 9:31, 9:51, 10:08, 9:49, 10:11, 9:46, 9:40, 9:57, 9:43

miles 21-26.23: 10:00, 9:58, 10:23, 10:23, 10:26, 9:59, 8.45 (last .23 miles)

miles 26.23-30.23: 10:26, 10:37, 10:26, 10:26

miles 30.23-40.23: 12.35, 12:10, 10.38, 12:03, 11:15, 11:09, 11:14, 11:18, 10:48, 10:30

over all avg pace was 10:19 (for running).

stretching & rolling helped too, but that roller sure does hurt- in a good way.

Ah, the extra sleep in the morning is marvelous- I can't deny it.

I was going to try a short run.  I thought 2 miles would be a good starting point.  Guess  jumped the gun a little because after 1/2 a mile, soreness was creeping in on those places I'm prone to injure.  I stopped at a mile and walked the other one. Just not worth pushing it right now.  I've got 6 weeks till OBX, and I'm going to get back to training as soon as my body is ready.

I'm just not sure when that is.  What's a good "recovery" time to let muscles heal?

I think I'll stick with the elliptical tomorrow.  Just put in the same time that I'd put in if I were going to be running.  Is that okay?

Lots of questions...any help/suggestions are appreciated.

I spent 90 minutes on the elliptical. Difficulty level of maybe a 3 or 4.  BUT: no pain or soreness anywhere today!!  I'll do the same tomorrow, maybe kick it up to a 4 or 5 :-)

2 hr delay tomorrow at school for the horrid rain, so maybe I'll try a shred in there too...or is that too much too soon?

90 more minutes on the elliptical.  the first 45 were on a more challenging level, then the last 45 were the same as yesterday.

When I get a late start and have to run 9 miles, I can try & run faster to get back sooner.  When I get a late start on the elliptical, it doesn't matter how fast & furiously I go, it still takes 90 minutes :-(

Hoping to do a little light running on Saturday.  Might go for another 1 mile trial run tomorrow and see how it feels before I commit to something more than that.  And maybe, I'll just take Saturday and go visit the shoe store in Raleigh since I think it's time for another pair.

Good luck to all the SGM runners this week-end!  Drive safe and run swift.
