Went to bed early the night before, but hotel doors slamming all night kept me up till 11.  And I was worried about jr at home alone (not sure which I was more worried about- him or the home), so my sleep time really suffered.  I finally found some ear plugs at 11:00 and then got some sleep.

The course is nice and flat for this race, and this year was the best weather year yet!  No snow, no rain, temps in the am were just around 40 (chilly just standing around), but warmed up to the 60's by the afternoon.  Perfect running weather.

MR and I ran together.  He ended up pacing us a little faster than I'd anticipated, and I was surprised that he didn't KO by mile 10, but that race adrenaline kicked in and he brought us both in with new PRs.

Our goal was under 2.  Getting in under 1:55 was just a treat.  I was happy all our miles but one were under 9mm.  And that was the mile with the mile 10 waterbreak when I had to stop to walk to catch my breath, eat my gu, drink some water & spill pink gatorade all over myself.

Average was an 8:43 pace.  I really tried to run good tangents, and for me, .08 isn't bad.  Splits were: 8:34, 8:38, 8:40, 8:42, 8:44, 8:37, 8:56 (water/gu), 9:00 (water again), 8:42, 8:37, 9:14 (water/gu), 8:45, 8:19, and 7:33 for the last .18.

This was a great run, but I didn't "enjoy" it as much as I have in the past when I've just been running to have fun rather than running to meet a new PR goal.  I missed a lot by staying focused on running instead of noticing the other runners, the beach, the gay dolphin store, etc.

And I guess there are 2 ferris wheels in myrtle beach now.  I thought I was having a bad mind trip when I saw one on the run up ahead of us and I could have sworn we'd already passed it.

The after run food was great.  chocolate milk, hot chicken noodle soup, the banana, orange, bagel, muffin & more tent, krispy kreme donuts that were waiting to be dipped in hot chocolate sauce and rolled in sprinkles (those were sooooo good), and of course the beer tent where MR had his beer & mine too.

We went back to the hotel, spent some time in the hot tub, took a nap, went for a 2 mile walk on the beach, and found our way to a Red Robin for some rootbeer float training time.  He got in 4, and I managed to take down 3 with 2 orders of sweet potato fries.  Needless to say, I was hitting the tums pretty hard by bedtime, but it was all worth it.

MR says he might even try a marathon sometime.  He'll need his own medal rack soon if he keeps this up!  My quads are sore from the run- not something I usually experience, but then I've never run 13 miles at that speed before, so I don't know what to expect.

YEEHAAAW!!! CONGRATZ on the PR!!! Most excitingly you ran the whole thing with the MR! How AWESOME!!! STRONG FINISH to boot!!! Check out that 8:13 and 7:33! WAY to kick it in!!! GREAT RACE!!! :)

That post-race feast is making my mouth water. Glad you had good weather this year. I heard it got cancelled one year due to bad storm?

Sounds like you'd better sign the MR. up for a marathon while he still is basking in the post-race bliss! :)

GOOD JOB you two! :) :) :) :)

Way to go on a new PR....for both you and MR. And a good pace at the finish too. By the way, I think there is only one ferris wheel at Myrtle beach, the other one was just a mind trip caused by spilling too much pink gatorade all over yourself :)

So the question I want to ask is - was getting a better time worth not "enjoying" the race as much? If you had to do it again, would you do it the same?

From Terri on Mon, Feb 20, 2012 at 08:06:02 from 72.66.72.85

I know that PR feels great! Fantastic run! You guys are an awesome team!

Smooth- thank you! It is always fun to get a new PR and run with a buddy. The race was cancelled 2 years ago due to snow. It wouldn't have even caused a stir in Utah, but out here, a little snow is a BIG deal and people don't know how to react. With a course that shares the road with cars, it could have been deadly.

bye-wing: gatorade induced delusions- I'm sure it's not the first time it's happened. Thanks for clearing that up.

Good question about was it worth it. The short answer is yes. It's been 4 years since I tried for a 1/2 marathon PR. I don't want to do it all the time, at every race (I enjoy the fun running too much), but every once in a while, it's nice to get a new PR. I won't need to work on another PR for years since I've got my full and half PRs both in the last 6 months! Time to just enjoy the journey.

Terri- we are a great team. Not as great as Shake & Bake, but pretty good all the same!

Wow! Nice Job! I spilled Hammer Gel on my shirt Saturday. That stuff is like cement. It dries hard as a rock. Again, nice job on the super fast PR, wonderfully healthy snacks, and root beer float binge. I'm jealous.

Soooo....according to the race predictor, you should be able to pull a 4:01 at Des News Marathon. Wanna sign MR up and go for it?!? I say you should. I would even do it with you...really would!!! Another PR? :)

Nice job on the excellent race, sorry I was one of the crazies keeping you from a good nights sleep. Looks like you didn't have to worry about the HOUSE too much...kids!

What good would a race be without finishing with a little gatorade down your shirt? :) I can't believe I forgot about the Gay Dolphin! I need to go back to Myrtle Beach. The year it falls on my birthday you'd better believe I'm gonna be there running the full!!! I think I have a few years.

Great report, I loved it all, especially the food reports - you always need a good food report :)

QP and Mr QP - congrads on the PRs, 500 commando points each. Sounds like a great race and day, how good does it get, two miles on the beach after a hot tub, living like the king and queen of running. QP, you are now a racer, under two hrs, nice work, every step and second counts. OK, when is the marathon?

Sweet race QP! I am glad that you got to run a race with MR, that is pretty neat! Nice and cool weather is always a plus. Your pic is cute.

From The Quiet Pirate on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 13:33:30 from 152.26.59.252

Chad- the root beer floats were marvelous. They should make rootbeer float flavored hammer gel. It's nice a liquidy in the pkg, but dries like a rock! 72 hour emergency kit- food and/or super glue!

RAD- I'm not really up for the downhill beating my knees and quads would take on the desnews marathon. I'll try to make the 10k though.

Brent- It's nice having a partner to run with- you know how it is. No date set for the marathon, we've got some obstacle mud runs planned this spring.

Bec- thanks! I love my running buddy.
