Easy three around the hood.  Followed by the shred video.  Mr. did both with me.  It was fun.  Still a bit sore from the first day of shred, but getting better.

This was my easy week run.  It was cold (for me): around 30o, and there was a super strong wind.  Mr. ran with me.  We kept a pretty steady pace, except for mile 5, and somehow that was just slower.  Paces were between 9:30 and 10:00.

We ran out on the roads.  Got some hills in by running the overpasses that went over the 95 and 301.   Still working on strength training daily too.

Oh the dark, cold, early mornings are here again.

I had such trouble getting up this morning.  The kids still have school off  today, so I did get away with a couple of snooze button hits.

19o outside- too cold for my liking.  Paces were 9:45 to start, 9:25 at the end.  I was going to shred this morning, but I'll have to do it tomorrow since I slept in today.

I didn't sleep well last night.  Tired is the flavor of the day today.

Paces: 9:59, 9:29, 9:30, 9:20(the last.6)

The news said it was 23o but my outdoor thermostat said 19o.  I guess it doesn't matter, because it was just cold.  It's supposed to be cold like this all week.  I realize it's warm compared to the 5o weather others are out in, but I want to complain anyway.

I was trying to wear a gator mask when I ran, and it got wet from my breath, then it was difficult to breathe through the wet material.  I'd like some advice on wearing things to warm up the air that don't block my breathing....anyone?

Did the shred yesterday afternoon, and I'm not terribly sore today.  Woohoo!  I think I'll try and do it again today.  I've also got some pilates videos I need to break in.  Just something indoors.

Top 5 excuses for not running this morning:

1-legs very sore from the shred workout (I assume that's why, it's the only variable)

2- had to drive to seminary (I would have had to get up at 4 am to do my run)

3-wind chill in the low teens at 4 am

4-groin still a little sore

5-I didn't want to be the "perfectionist" I'd read about in the runner's world mag yesterday :0)

I did the shred again yesterday after work.  I thought it was getting easier, so I'm not sure why my legs are so sore.  I think I've been doing more of the "challenging" versions of the exercises and moving up from the "easier" side.  Mabye that's it.  I don't know.

Is it a good idea to do a 7 mile interval run (3x1600 at an 830 pace) when my legs are sore like this?  If it's good to do, then I'll run after work.  If it's better to rest, I'll do it tomorrow.  What does the jury think?

_______________________

UPDATE:  Headed out just before 5 pm.  Weater was much nicer in the afternoon than the morning.  Started out comfortable.  Ran 3 miles at a slower pace.  Then tried a mile at the 8:30 tempo.  I overshot the time and ran too fast, but I was thrilled that nothing hurt.  In fact, the running seemed to help the sore muscles.  I did a 800 recovery then 2 miles at the 8:30 tempo.  I worked at keeping it as close as I could to 8:30.  I think I ended up running 8:45 half the time and 8:15 the other half, but it all worked out in the wash.  I had a 800 recovery at the end.  I ran the last .2 miles home because it had gotten dark and it was time to pick up the little pirate from school.

Paces were: 9:55, 9:22, 9:16, 7:59, 10:31 (.5 recovery, water:, took off one jacket layer), 8:37, 8:27, 9:28 (.5 cool down), 9:55 (.2 finish to home).

I think I had a mental block that an 8:30 would be too hard for me.  It had been a long time (3 weeks) since I'd run speed like that and I was happy to see that I could do it.

Braces for the littlest pirate today.  I slept in again because I knew that I'd have the afternoon to run.  I was glad I waited because it was lovely warm outside at 3 pm (40o).

Shorter run because my legs were really sore.  And the running didn't make it feel better, just felt like running on tired legs.  Which is good practice, but I didn't want to over-do anything because I've got 18 miles on Saturday.

Paces were: 9:39, 9:17, 9:24, 9:42.  I was making a concious effort to slow down the last mile.  Just trying something different since I'd done speed the day before.

It's a tri-fecta!  Our schools were on a 2 hour delay today, so no seminary!  I got to sleep in again for the 3rd day in a row.  I think it was my Dad's b-day gift to me on his birthday.  He loved sleeping in.

I got 20 minutes on the elliptical.  I want the tired & sore in my legs to heal up for the long run tomorrow.  I would have love to have done the shred video, but I didn't want to make more sore muscles.

I got to make my kids pancakes for breakfast and had dinner in the crockpot before going to work.  All kinds of things happen when I get enough sleep and have extra time in the morning.  I think all Fridays should be this way.

I guess there was snow forcast & that's why the delay was called last night.  But I'm telling you, it was 40o outside at 7:30 this morning.  The warmest morning we've had all week.  And not a drop of snow (or even precip) where we live.  So it was all good.  I just wish I would have had the 40o for tomorrow, because that's my 18 miler, and the high is supposed to 34 with a wind chill making it feel like the 20's.

At least it won't be 80 with 90% humidity, right?

My mileage estimate was a little off today, so I ended up running more than I'd planned.  It turned out okay, and I had a wonderful run with good company the whole time.

I did an out and back, then out again run.  Down to Sealey's house, back here, and back to Sealey's.  We thought it was just a little over 6 miles to her house, and that would give me the 18 with a little room at the end to cool down.  When we actually arrived at her house, our distance was 6.86.  So we were in for a longer run.  No big deal.  At her house, we stopped for a couple minutes, got water and pick up Sealey.  She ran her first 13.1 today.  It was fun to see her accomplish her first 1/2 marathon distance.  We woo-hooed as she hit the mark, and then she kept running to finish her distance.

We also stopped for a few minutes when we got back to my house.  Got water, a little gatorade, warmed up, and used to potty.  So we ran three 6.86 legs with a little stop off at each end mark.  The break gave us a chance to rest a little.  It was nice.

The sun was out all morning, and it made us feel warmer.  The winds actually dropped during the course of our run, so they weren't a problem.  Our starting temp was 29o    with 6 mph winds and 34% humidity.  By the end it was a balmy 36with 3 mph winds and 30% humidity.  I'm glad I didn't get up in the early hours to run.  Getting a good night's sleep is part of being ready for a good, long run.

Starting time was 10:44 am.   Paces were 10:01, 9:59, 9:49, 9:48, 9:42, 9:56, 9:56, 10:06, 10:17, 10:24, 10:39, 10:29, 10:23, 10:22, 10:10, 10:07, 10:20, 10:01, 10:14, 10:15, 9:07(last .47) .  I intentionally tried picking up the pace there at the end.  My paces were slower than normal, but I was happy with the distance and the company.  I felt good when I'd finished the run, and still had energy.  No cramps, thanks to the great chicken tortilla soup!  I also made the white bean and ham soup from the January Runner's World magazine this week.  It is delicious.  I'd recommend it to anyone.  It's super easy to make.  The only change I made was adding twice the broth it called for.

Now I'm enjoying the home made pretzels mini- me made while I was out paving the streets.  Sealey gave me a whole wheat croissant after the run.  I've never had anything that good for an after run treat.  Yummy times!

Still cold outside.  Weather man said 17 before I went out the door.  I'm waiting for the warm-up they keep promising later this week.

Ran 5 miles.  Started slower, then found a 9:35 pace average the last 4 miles.  Nothing hurt, but I could feel my legs were still a bit tired from Saturday when I got to 1/2 mile point.

Came home, ate a little, then I did the shred 1 workout.  Tired legs for sure, but I could tell my arms were getting a little stronger.

Back to work, happy day.

______________

On a side note, I think I might have started falling asleep while I was running this morning.  I was running my route backward, and at one point in the run, the road dead-ended in front of me, and I looked up and cried out, "where am I?"  I had no idea where I was.  Instead of running the cul-de-sac and going straight, I'd followed the curve of the road and ended up down a different street.  Totally took me by surprise.  I really don't remember having any thoughts passing through my head after I started the cul-de-sac.    It's a new one for me.

It was 33o ouside this morning at 5 am.  How ironic that I was excited at how warm it was.  It was 32 when I finished at 6.  Humidity low 40%.

6 miles, first slow at 10:10, then 4 miles around a 9:10 pace, last mile was 8:50.

Came home, fixed b-fast, then did the shred 1 before I ate and got ready for the day.

Uneventful morning.

got up and ran this morning.  low, low 20's from 5-6 am.  they're promising warmer weather tomorrow

5 slow miles.  Warm up was 10:59, then 3 at 9:50 and a 9:40 for the last mile.

Tried bleachers after school.  That was tough.  It had been a month since I'd done them, and my legs had forgotten how to master those steps.  I only managed a mile on the bleachers, then ran around the track for a while.

I am so glad this week is over.  So busy at work with end of semester testing.  And topped off with a tough 20 mile run today.  It'll be one of those weeks I look back on and say, at least my week isn't as crazy as that week.

We had church cleaning duty this am.  Then home for b-fast and off to our run.  We went on a new course today.  It was cool to get to run around the airfield and watch the planes take off and land.  It was a 6.5 mile loop, and I thought it was going to be flat, but I was wrong.  We started at the top, ran down, then around the airfield, and then, at the end....back up.  It was about a mile uphill climb.  Good training, but not what I was expecting.

Mr. ran the first two loops with me.  We kept a good pace up until mile 10, and then we slowed a little.  My over-all pace was around 9:50.  Not my best 20 mile pace, but I was just happy to finish today.  At mile 16, I had an emotional break-down and didn't think I'd be able to finish.  I called RAD for some encouragement around 17.  It was just what I needed.

We are fast, we are strong, we can run all day long!  I just repeated the chant over and over.  Luckily, Mr. found me (he was driving around in the car) and gave me some gatorade a couple of times the last 2 miles.  After I got up that big hill the last time, and only had .5 miles left, I had a good fast run down the other side of the hill to finish.

We went and had a whopper after a quick shower at the gym.  It was so scrumptious.  I was going to get ice cream, but the shake I wanted was out...so I'm holding off till Monday to get my tasty shake.  I'll be deciding all day Sunday  on what will be the best shake ever.

We had a big shopping trip to do before we went home, then we took the kids out for dinner, and after that went to watch our local hockey team get beat down by a team from Mississippi.  Final score 2-5.  Good fights= 0.  Drunk people arguing with security=2.  At least we got one good show!

Thanks again RAD for the help.  I needed it soooooo badly.  You're the best.

Seminary driving is really putting a cramp in my style.

Crazy isn't a strong enough word for this week.

Warm up mile and 2.5 at a 9 mm pace.

Rain after school, so no bleachers.  Maybe a shred if I don't have an ulcer when I get home.

Told family they'd have to wait for dinner because I was going to "shred."  It was great.  They didn't starve to death either.  Surprise!

3 mile run. 10:04, 9:07, 8:40 paces.

I needed to run more than I needed to rest today.

Quote of the day from runner's world.com  It's by Dagny Scott, but I thought it did a good job explaining how I felt too:

"I ran to be free; I ran to avoid pain; I ran to feel pain; I ran out of love and hate and anger and joy."

15 total miles.  Ran with Mr. for the first 10.5, then finished the rest up while he rode the bike with me.  That was able to help me pick up my pace for the last few miles.

On Sunday night, I was looking at my running schedule and I was actually supposed to run 16.  Oh well, I had a busy day and 15 was all I had time for anyway.

Training plan said 4 today.  I was going to do more, but I ended up close to home around mile 4, and it had started to rain/downpour, so I finished up.

For reasons I don't understand, I started counting my breaths.  I realized I was doing it around #30, and I just kept counting the whole time.  I am pretty sure I lost count when it got up high, but I ended up around 1400.  I don't know why I was doing it, but once I started, I couldn't stop.  I don't think I'm going to try that again any time soon.  Time for the mp3 player I guess.

Times started slow at 10:40, then 9:48, then 9:06, then 8 something...

I was going to run my 8 this morning, but a 3 am phne call that led to me having to drive to seminary put my plans on hold.  I could have gotten ready and run at 3:45 am, but i just decided I'd rather sleep another hour or so and run after work.

It's my last speed workout 4 miles @ 8:25 with 800m rests in between, warm & cool down.  My race is in 2 1/2 weeks.  Yikes.

My problem is coming this week end.  I have a 20 miler scheduled 2 weeks before ther race, and it's going to be freezing rain & sleet all day saturday w/ a high of 30. What am I supposed to do?

I ran 15 last week, but I ran 20 miles both weeks previously.  Am I going to be ruining my chances for success if I don't do this 20 on Sat?  I'm thinking I can maybe run on Sunday morning before church if I have to.  Stupid weather.

Got my 8 in. The faster paces went okay, and I was able to keep it above the 8:25.  Around mile 5, my watch started beeping like crazy because the laps section was full...it didn't keep track of my times after that, but for the last pace section I left it on so I could hear the "your'e too slow warning."  I only heard it once for my last speed mile, so I'm sure I kept it in the range.  After that, I turned the watch off for the last 1.5 miles of cool down. I know the distance was good, and the time didn't matter.  I was just sick of listening to the beep beep beep.

4 morning miles.  I'm not sure if I'll do a shred after school or not.  My times were slowly increasing today, 10:40, 9:32, 9:28, 9:10.

I wasn't trying to go very fast because I'd just run the 8 last night.  I was surprised that my legs weren't more sore this morning.  My own little victory.

Temps just around 32.

Not sure what's going to happen tomorrow with the weather.  It looks like it's going to be bad, but they've been wrong before.  So I did 3 miles this morning and a seminary pick up.

Paces were 9:48, 9:28, 9:17.

Beautiful full moon.

Early dismissal from school because of the bad weather that was coming.  I took the opportunity to run since there wasn't any precip yet.  I'd had a huge steak for lunch, not thinking I'd be running a couple hours later.  It wasn't too bad during the run, and the steak was delicious.  I don't think I'd ever do it again intentionally though.

I was planning on running till the sun went down, or the rain started.  But by mile 11, my legs were starting to cramp a little behind my knees, and I was feeling tired, so I quit at mile 12, just before 5 pm.  It was getting colder and windy outside, but it's 10 pm and we still haven't seen any precip down where we live.

If it's still dry or not too icy tomorrow, I'll try and get out for another 12 or so.  It's not the ideal way to run 20, but I thought it was better to get something instead of nothing.

Tasty home made rocky road cookies just out of the oven when I got home from the run.  Delicious!

I just heard some rain/sleet outside on the window.  I guess it's here for now.

Woke up to white snow on everything covered with a sheet of ice from freezing rain that lasted most morning and early afternoon.

It's the first saturday I haven't run for a long time.  It seems more like a sunday since we're all home together all day & not going out to do a million things.

Tomorrow will be a repeat since church is cancelled.  Maybe if it's warm enough to melt some of the ice, I'll get to run tomorrow...maybe.  Depends on whether I make those oatmeal chocolate chip cookies or not.

I was thinking it would have been a good day for yak-trax, but then I enjoyed the break so much, I'll keep them off my wish list for the time being.

The best part of today was watching all the birds at the birdfeeder all day long.  It took them a year to find it, but they finally did, and they ate all day long.  I counted 20 birds at one time.  Some waiting in the tree, some on the snow below eating the stuff that fell down, and some on the feeder.  Most of them were little birds, but there was one that looked like a dove, and a cardinal.  Pretty cool.

We were up late last night.  Mr. had to drive to work to welcome back a team member from the sand box at 11 pm.  I was terribly worried about the icy roads, so I went with him to keep him company and be there to help push the car out of the ditch if needed.

We got home around 3 am, so my sleeping in till 9 didn't mean as much as it usually does.

The roads around the hood were pretty cleared today.  Some icy spots where the sun couldn't get through the trees...so we had to run really carefully on those spots.  By the time I was done, around 3, there was a lot less ice than when I started.  It was nice and sunny today, and I got to see the ice melt on the cars and roads as I was out running the loop over and over again.  The busy roads aren't safe because there's no shoulder at all right now w/o ice.

The snow is covered with a sheet of ice.  When I walk on the snow, I just slip around...I don't even break through the snow, just slide around on top of it.  It's different than the snow I'm used to out west.

I was surprised that they've cancelled school on Monday.  I was expecting a 2 hour delay, but not cancellation.  I'm hoping to be more productive at home tomorrow than the last two days.  I've still got those cookies to make.  They're healthy because they've got oatmeal, flax seeds, and whole wheat flour in them.

I really enjoyed my run today in the sun.  Mr. ran the first 8.5 with me, then he rode the bike along side of me while I finished the 20.  It was a nice time to spend together.  I had to take one bathroom break at mile 14.5, so that would have added a few minutes to my time, but since I stopped my watch for that break, my overall pace was 9:42.  I think I had negative splits on the second half, but my legs are too tired to get up and find my Garmin right now.  I was able to pick up the pace the last 1/2 mile, so my last mile total was an 8:59 pace.

I'm glad I was able to get this run in.  It really boosted my confidence.  2 weeks till show time.  I hope the weather is like today and not yesterday for the race.
